Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt among stars paying tribute to the late John Prine

Bruce Springsteen is among the artists paying tribute to acclaimed folk-country singer/songwriter John Prine, who died Monday at age 73 after contracting the COVID-19 virus.

“Over here on E Street, we are crushed by the loss of John Prine,” Springsteen writes in a message posted on his official website. “John and I were ‘New Dylans’ together in the early 70s and he was never anything but the [loveliest] guy in the world. A true national treasure and a songwriter for the ages. We send our love and prayers to his family.”

Also paying homage to Prine is Bonnie Raitt, whose 1974 cover of John’s “Angel from Montgomery” helped bring wide recognition to the tune.

“Words can’t even come close,” Raitt writes in a note on her website. “I’m crushed by the loss of my dear friend, John. My heart and love go out to [his wife] Fiona and all the family. For all of us whose hearts are breaking, we will keep singing his songs and holding him near.”

Here are some other tributes to Prine:

ZZ Top‘s Billy Gibbons: “We were saddened to learn of John Prine’s passing, the loss of a true American treasure. He was admired both for his art and for his sheer humanity. He had a nobility that radiated liked a million watt radio station just across the border.”

E Street Band member Nils Lofgren: “Farewell sweet man. There’s a hole in our hearts that we will never fill.”

Sheryl Crow: “My heart hurts learning that John Prine has passed away. He is singing with the angels. You will be missed but your songs will live on.”

Prine weathered several health issues over the past few decades, including two bouts with cancer, before succumbing to complications from the coronavirus.

Prine was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2019, and in January of this year, he received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award recipient. He also was nominated for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.
