HUSKERS> Nebraska backup guard Nana Akenten has been suspended indefinitely for violating team rules.  Coach Tim Miles announced the suspension Thursday. Akenten has appeared in 28 games, averaging 4.3 points and 2.5 rebounds per game.  Nebraska will play Iowa on Sunday.  We’ll have it on 1230AM KHAS and “The Breeze,” KLIQ 94.5FM beginning with the pre-game show at 12:00pm.

The Nebraska women’s basketball team lost to Purdue 75-71 last night in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament in Indianapolis. Taylor Kissinger hit five three-pointers and finished with 15 points for the Huskers.  Nebraska ends the season 14-16.

In the other games, Michigan State beat Northwestern 68-52, Wisconsin surprised Ohio State 73-63 and Indiana beat Minnesota 66-58.  Today, Michigan State will play top seeded Maryland at 11:00am followed by Wisconsin against Michigan at 1:00pm.  At 5:30pm, it’s Indiana against Iowa followed by Purdue against Rutgers at 7:30.  Semifinals are set for Saturday.  The championship game will be played on Sunday.

BRONCOS> The Hastings College women’s basketball team had their worst offensive game of the season, but still was able to beat Aquinas of Michigan 54-46 last night in the NAIA National Tournament in Sioux City.  The 54 points was a season low for the Broncos.  Hastings hit only 21 of 67 shots including 5 of 23 from three point territory.  The Saints hit only 25 percent of their shots.  Aquinas was 4 of 20 from long range.  Hastings was out rebounded 62-32.  Mackenzie Willicott had 12 points for the Broncos, Emma Grenfell had 11 and Kaitlyn Schmit added 10.  Hastings is now 20-12 on the season and will play the College of Ozarks at 8:45pm tonight.  We’ll have it on 1230AM KHAS beginning with the pre-game show at 8:30pm.

In some other games yesterday, Dakota Wesleyan beat St. Thomas of Florida 97-66 and Northwestern downed Olivet Nazarene 93-80.

At the men’s tournament in Sioux Falls yesterday, Morningside beat Mayville State 90-55.

H.S. HOOPS> It was not a good day for area teams on the opening day of the Boys State High School Basketball Tournament in Lincoln.  North Bend Central beat Adams Central 42-37.  Nolan Sughroue led the Patriots with 13 points, Haggan Hilgendorf had 12 and Thomas Hunt had 11.  Adams Central ends the season 17-8.  In some other games, Auburn beat Grand Island Central Catholic 44-42, Yutan upset Sutton 55-45, Falls City Sacred Heart downed Blue Hill 57-54 and Omaha South knocked off Kearney 69-55.

HUSKERS BASEBALL> The Husker Baseball team will have a three game series on the road against Baylor, who is ranked 21st in the nation, starting today at 6:35. Tomorrow’s game will get underway at 3:05 and Sunday’s will start at 12:05. The Huskers will be looking to improve on their 4-6 start.

HUSKER SOFTBALL > The Husker Softball team will also have a 3 game series this weekend. They are on the road against Wichita State. They’ll play a double header tomorrow at 1:00pm and 3:00pm. Then they’ll wrap up the series on Sunday at 1:00. The Husker softball team currently sits at 10-6.

BRONCOS SOFTBALL > The Hastings College softball team will play a doubleheader today on the road against Friends University. The first game will get underway at 2:00 with the second game to follow shortly after the first one ends. The Broncos are currently 3-5 on the year.
