Local Sports 06-11-2019

The 2019 College World Series schedule is set, as Auburn and Arkansas earned the final two spots for Omaha.  On Monday, Auburn beat North Carolina, 14-7, after scoring 13 runs in the first inning. Later, Arkansas beat Ole Miss, 14-1. The two join Florida State, Louisville, Michigan, Mississippi State, Texas Tech and Vanderbilt in the CWS field.

On Saturday, Texas Tech will play Michigan at 1:00pm followed by Arkansas against Florida State at 6:00pm.  On Sunday, Vanderbilt will play Louisville at 1:00pm followed by Mississippi State against Auburn at 6:00pm.  We’ll have all the games from the College World Series on ESPN 1550 KICS.

Husker freshman wide receiver/running back Wan’dale Robinson was cited on suspicion of possession of less than an ounce of marijuana on Sunday night.  UNL police were called to a room in the University Suites after a community service officer smelled marijuana coming from the room.  Three people were in the room, but Robinson was the only one cited.  The marijuana was found in Robinson’s vehicle during a search.  Since it is Robinson’s first offense, the citation is considered an infraction, not a misdemeanor.  Robinson’s court appearance is set for July 9th.

Nebraska two way player Colby Gomes was named a freshman All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.  The 6-foot-5, 225 pound Gomes was named to the team as a relief pitcher after racking up 13 saves for the Huskers in 19 appearances.

Doane University women’s basketball coach Tracee Fairbanks has resigned.  Fairbanks has guided the Tigers for the past 20 seasons, taking the team to a pair of NAIA National Tournaments in 2005 and 2006.  She was named the GPAC Coach of the Year in 2005.

Grand Island Senior HIgh has named some new varsity head coaches.  Kirby Wells will take over the baseball program while Jeremiah Slough will be the new girls golf coach  In addition Scott Hirchert will take over cross country, James Kuebler is the new boys golf coach, Josh Budler is the new girls tennis coach and Molly Elge and Andrea Hill are  the new co-head coaches for unified track.

Spearfish beat the Hastings Sodbusters 3-2 last night at Duncan Field.  Trey Kissack was the losing pitcher.  He went seven innings and gave up three runs and seven hits.  Kissack struck out nine and walked one.  Hastings is now 5-10 on the season and will play the Western Nebraska Pioneers tonight in Gering.  First pitch is set for 6:35pm.

Hastings Runza took a pair of games from Twin River yesterday at Duncan Field, 16-3 and 19-8.  Hastings is now 10-5-1 on the season and will play host to Lincoln Southeast in a doubleheader tomorrow night at the Smith Complex beginning at 5:00pm.

Hastings Five Points Bank will host Columbus tonight at Duncan Field.  Hastings is 11-4 on the season and has already beaten Columbus twice this season 7-4 and 9-1.  First pitch will be at 7:30pm.  We’ll have it on 1230AM KHAS beginning with the pre-game show at 7:15pm. Hastings Johnson Imperial Homes will play the first game at 5:00pm.

ROYALS> The Kansas City Royals begin a series with the Detroit Tigers tonight.  The Royals are 20-45 on the season.  First pitch will be at 7:15pm.  Pre-game show begins at 6:30pm on “The Breeze,” KLIQ 94.5FM.

NBA> In the NBA Finals last night, Golden State got by Toronto 106-105.  Stephen Curry scored 31 points for the Warriors.  Klay Thompson had 26.  Kevin Durant was injured in the second quarter after returning to the line-up for the first time since May 9th.  Toronto still leads the best of seven series 3-2.  Game six is Thursday night in California.

NHL> The Stanley Cup championship will be decided tomorrow night as St. Louis will play at Boston.  That series is tied at three games apiece.  The puck will drop at 7:o0pm
