Local Sports 1-10-2019

The Nebraska men’s basketball team will play Penn State tonight at Pinnacle Bank Arena.  The Huskers are 11-4 on the season, 1-3 in the Big Ten Conference after Sunday’s 93-84 loss to Iowa.  The Nittany Lions are 7-8, 0-4 in the conference.  Penn State is led by senior forward Lamar Stevens, who is averaging 18.9 points and 8.1 rebounds per game.  Tip-off will be at 8:05pm.  We’ll have it on “The Breeze,” KLIQ 94.5FM beginning with the pre-game show at 7:04pm.


Nebraska’s James Palmer Junior was one of 25 players named to the Wooden Award Midseason Top 25.  Palmer is averaging 20.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game.  Palmer was also one of 30 players named to the Watch List for the Lute Olson Award.


Tanner Shuck hit a three pointer and a free throw in the final 2.6 seconds last night to give Concordia an 87-84 win over Hastings College.  Shuck finished with a game high 23 points.  Brendan Lipovsky had 21 for the Broncos.  Concordia out rebounded Hastings 38-23, including 18-5 on the offensive end.  Hastings is now 12-7 on the season, 5-6 in the conference.  They’ll play at Mount Marty on Saturday.


The Hastings College women’s basketball team lost to Concordia 102-85.  The Bulldogs hit nine three pointers in the first half shot 57 percent from the field and raced out to a 62-38 lead by halftime.  Hastings trailed by as many as 32 points early in the fourth quarter.  Concordia was led by Grace Berry with a game high 19 points on 8 for 14 shooting.  Gabby Grasso and Kaitlin Schmit had 15 points apiece for the Broncos.  Taylor Beacom added 14 points on 5 for 7 shooting while Mackenzie Willicot finished with 12 points and eclipsed one thousand points for her career.  Hastings is now 10-8 on the season, 6-6 in the conference.  They’ll also play at Mount Marty on Saturday.


The Nebraska-Kearney basketball teams will play Central Oklahoma tonight at the Health and Sports Center.  The Loper men are 5-8 on the season, 0-4 in the MIAA.  The women are 8-5, 1-3 in the league.  The women’s game begins at 5:30pm with the men to follow at 7:30pm.


High School basketball continues tonight as the Hastings St. Cecilia boys and girls play at Minden.  Coverage begins at 5:45pm on 1230 AM KHAS.  On Power 99, KKPR, it’s Broken Bow at Kearney Catholic beginning at 5:15pm.
