Local Sports 1-8-2019

Nebraska has dropped out of the latest AP Men’s College Basketball Poll.  The Huskers have suffered back-to-back losses to Maryland and Iowa and are among the teams receiving votes.  Duke is ranked number one followed by Michigan, Tennessee, Virginia and Gonzaga.  Rounding out the top ten are Michigan State, Kansas, Texas Tech, Virginia Tech and Nevada.  Nebraska will play Penn State on Thursday.  Tip-off will be at 8:00pm at Pinnacle Bank Arena.  We’ll have it on “The Breeze,” KLIQ 94.5FM beginning with the pre-game show at 7:00pm.

 

The Nebraska women’s basketball team will play host to 9th ranked Maryland tonight.  The Huskers are 7-7 on the season, 2-1 in the Big Ten Conference after losing to Iowa 77-71 last Thursday in Iowa City.  The Terrapins are 13-1, 2-1 in the conference, suffering a 73-65 home loss to Rutgers on New Years Eve.  Maryland is led by junior Kaila Charles, who is averaging 16.8 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.  Tip-off will be at 7:00pm.  We’ll have it on “The Breeze,” KLIQ 94.5FM beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45pm.

 

Nebraska’s Leigha Brown has been named the Big Ten Women’s Basketball Freshman of the Week.  Brown averaged 19.5 points, 2.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals in a pair of games for the Huskers last week.

 

Nebraska is listed as a 25-1 choice to win the 2020 college football national championship at the Westgate Superbook in Las Vegas. The odds were posted after Clemson won this year’s championship with a 44-16 win over Alabama last night.  The Tigers are picked to repeat in 2020.  Alabama is the second choice.  Ohio State and Georgia are listed at 12-1, Michigan 14-1, Oklahoma 15-1 and Texas is at 20-1.  Nebraska, Washington, Florida and Notre Dame are all 25-1.

 

Lincoln Pius beat the Kearney boys 73-69 last night to win the Heartland Athletic Conference Championship.  Charlie Easley scored 26 points for the Thunderbolts.  It’s the first conference championship for Pius.  It joined the HAC this season after 62 years without a conference affiliation.

 

Elsewhere in boy’s basketball last night, Heartland Lutheran beat Silver Lake 45-36 and Mankato-Rock Hills of Kansas knocked off Red Cloud 58-24.  In girls play, Silver Lake beat Heartland Lutheran 60-27 and Red Cloud defeated Mankato-Rock Hills 42-24.

 

Tonight, Northwest will play at St. Cecilia and Hastings is at Aurora.  We’ll have the Tigers on 1230AM KHAS beginning with the pre-game show at 5:45pm.  Ravenna is at Minden on Power 99, KKPR and on ESPN 1460 KXPN, it’s Lexington at Kearney Catholic.
