Local Sports 10-10-2018

The 5th ranked Nebraska volleyball team will host Indiana tonight at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.  The Huskers are 14-2 on the season, 5-1 in the Big Ten Conference.  The Hoosiers are 11-6 overall, 2-4 in the conference.  First serve will be at 7:00pm.  We’ll have it on “The Breeze,” KLIQ 94.5FM beginning with the pre-game show at 6:30pm.

 

The Husker basketball broadcast team will have a new sound to it, as former Husker point guard Jake Muhleisen will join Kent Pavelka on the Husker IMG Sports Radio Network this season.  Muhleisen will serve as the full time color analyst after seeing spot duty in that role in recent seasons.  He replaces Matt Davison, who served on the basketball broadcasts for 15 years before moving into a full time role as Associate Athletic Director last winter.

 

The Hastings College soccer teams continue to be ranked in the NAIA Coaches Top 25 Polls.  The men are 4th and the women are 16th.   The women will play at the College of St. Mary’s this afternoon.  Game time is set for 3:00pm.

 

The Hastings College volleyball team will play at Concordia tonight.  First serve will be at 7:30pm.

 

The MIAA Preseason Basketball Polls are out.  The Nebraska-Kearney men are picked ninth in the media poll and tenth in the coaches Poll.  Northwest Missouri State was picked first in the media poll, while Missouri Southern State grabbed the top spot in the coaches’ poll.  The Lopers finished 16-14 last year, 11-8 in the conference.

 

The Nebraska-Kearney women’s basketball team was picked ninth in both polls.  The Lopers finished 21-7 last year, 13-6 in the conference.  Central Missouri was tabbed the favorites in both polls.

 

The second day of the state golf championships were rained out yesterday, so round one results determined the winners.  Lincoln Southwest won the team championship in Class A, Omaha Duchesne in Class B and Cozad and Ogallala in Class C.  Danica Badura of Aurora finished second in Class B.  Haylee O’Dey of Adams Central was eighth.  Anna Cafferty of Hastings High was12th.

 

The state high school softball tournament will get underway today at the Smith Complex.  Class A first round games will be played at 2:00pm this afternoon, Class B games will go at 4:30pm with Class C at 7:00pm tonight.  Hastings will play Crete at 4:30pm this afternoon.  We’ll have it on 1230AM KHAS beginning with the pre-game show at 4:20pm.

 

Doniphan/Trumbull and St. Paul advanced to the finals of the Lou Platte Conference volleyball tournament last night.  The Cardinals beat Centura in three games while the Wildcats swept Wood River. The finals are set for tomorrow night.

 

In other action, Blue Hill beat Lawrence Nelson, Lincoln Northeast swept Grand Island, Lincoln Pius beat Kearney and Minden knocked off Cozad.  At the Holdrege Triangular, Grand Island Central Catholic beat Holdrege and Northwest while Northwest defeated Holdrege.

 

MLB> The Boston Red Sox beat the New York Yankees 4-3 last night to win the series three games to one.  The National League Championship Series will begin on Friday as the Los Angeles Dodgers play at Milwaukee.  The American League Championship Series will start on Saturday as Houston will play at Boston.

 

The Jacksonville Jaguars, plagued by injuries at running back, have signed free agent Jamaal Charles to a one-year deal. Charles spent nine years in Kansas City and played 14 games with the Denver Broncos last season. The four-time Pro Bowl selection has 7,5-hundred 56 yards rushing and 44 touchdowns.  He also has 25-hundred 86 yards receiving and 20 more scores.
