Local Sports 10-8-2018

Alabama is still number one in the latest AP College Football Poll.  The Crimson Tide are 6-0 on the season after Saturday’s 65-31 win over Arkansas.  Georgia is second followed by Ohio State, Clemson and Notre Dame.  Rounding out the top ten are West Virginia, Washington, Penn State, Texas and Central Florida.

 

Nebraska is now 0-5 on the season after Saturday’s 41-24 loss to Wisconsin.  Freshman quarterback Adrian Martinez set a Nebraska freshman record of 441 yards of total offense, including a career high and Husker freshman record 384 passing yards.  JD Spielman also set a school record with 209 yards receiving.  Nebraska will play at Northwestern on Saturday.  Kickoff is set for 11:00am.

 

The third ranked Nebraska volleyball team lost to 5th ranked Minnesota on Saturday.  The scores were 20-25, 25-23, 14-25, 21-25.  The loss snapped Nebraska’s 14 match winning streak.  Mikaela Foecke had a team high 16 kills.  Lexi Sun had 12.  Nebraska is now 14-2, 5-1 in the Big Ten Conference.  Nebraska will host Indiana on Wednesday.

 

The Hastings College football team beat Doane 22-19 on Saturday in Crete.  It’s the first win for the Broncos over the Tigers since 2011.  Hastings scored the winning touchdown with a one yard run from Tahj Willingham with: 33 seconds to play.  Willingham finished with 173 yards rushing with two touchdowns.  Hastings is now 3-3 on the season, 1-3 in the conference.  They’ll play host to Midland on Saturday.  Kickoff will be at 1:00pm.

 

The Hastings College volleyball team beat Jamestown 25-21, 25-20, 11-25, 25-22 on Saturday afternoon.  Lucy Skoch led the Broncos with 21 kills.  Sage Meyer had 16.  Hastings is now 12-5 on the season, 7-3 in the conference.  They’ll play at Concordia on Wednesday.

 

The Hastings College soccer teams beat Dakota Wesleyan on Saturday.  The women beat the Tigers 3-1 while the men picked up a 4-0 victory.  The women will play at the College of St. Mary’s on Wednesday.  Both teams will play at Briar Cliff on Saturday.

 

The Nebraska-Kearney football team beat Lindenwood University 41-14 on Saturday.  The Lopers are now 4-2.  The volleyball team beat Lindenwood on Friday and Central Missouri on Saturday.  The Lopers are now 22-1.

 

Hastings High has qualified for the state softball tournament for the fourth year in a row.  The Tigers beat Grand Island Northwest twice on Friday to win the district title.  Hastings will open the state tournament on Wednesday at 11:30am  with a game against Crete at the Smith Complex.

 

The state high school golf tournaments get underway today.  Class A is at the Norfolk Country Club, Class B At Quail Run in Columbus and Class C at Rivers Edge in North Platte.
