Local Sports 10-8-2019

The Nebraska volleyball team has dropped to fifth in the latest AVCA Coaches Poll.  The Huskers are 11-2 on the season after dropping a match to Wisconsin on Saturday.  Baylor is ranked number one followed by Stanford, Pittsburgh, Texas and Nebraska.  Rounding out the top ten are Minnesota, Wisconsin, Penn State, BYU and Marquette.  Illinois is 17th and Purdue is 20th.  Creighton checks in this week at number 13.

 

Nebraska-Kearney is up one spot to number three in the AVCA Division II poll.  The Lopers are 15-0.  Cal State San Bernardino is ranked number one.

 

Nebraska starting quarterback Adrian Martinez will be day to day this week and may not be available for Saturday’s game at Minnesota.  Martinez was injured in Saturday’s 13-10 win over Northwestern.  If Martinez can’t play, Husker head coach Scott Frost says Noah Vederal and Luke McCaffrey will be ready to go.  Kickoff for the game will be at 6:30pm.  Pre-game coverage begins at 1:30pm on “The Breeze,” KLIQ 94.5FM.

 

For the second time this season, Nebraska running back Wan’Dale Robinson has been named the Freshman of the Week in the Big 10 Conference.  Robinson accounted for 186 all purpose yards in Saturday’s game.  He rushed for 44 yards on seven carries and also caught seven passes for 123 yards.

 

For the fifth straight week, Morningside is ranked number one in the NAIA Football Coaches Top 25 poll.  The Mustangs are 4-0 on the season after Saturday’s 69-13 win over Hastings.  Northwestern is 7th in this weeks poll.

 

Adams Central will play Northwest today in the elimination game of the B-8 subdistrict softball tournament at the Smith Complex.  The Patriots beat the Vikings 18-6 yesterday in the opening round, but fell to Hastings High 9-4. Northwest stayed alive with a 13-9 win over St. Paul.  Game time will be at 2:00pm.  The winner will play Hastings High in the finals at 4:00pm.

 

At the B-7 subdistrict tournament at York, Grand Island Central Catholic will play Aurora in the elimination game at 11:00am this morning.  The winner will play York in the finals at 1:00pm.

 

York won the B-3 girls golf district yesterday at the York Country Club.  The Dukes finished with a team score of 410.  Aurora was second with a 417.  Northwest came in third with a 427.  Hastings High finished fourth with a 450.  Adams Central was eighth with a 577.  Danica Badura of Aurora was the medalist with a 76.  Natalie Brandt of Hastings High qualifies for state after finishing third with a 99.

 

NFL>  In the NFL last night, San Francisco beat Cleveland 31-3.  The Niners are now 4-0 on the season and off to their best start since 1990.

 

Former Nebraska and Oakland Raiders head coach Bill Callahan is now the interim head coach of the Washington Redskins, after Jay Gruden was let go yesterday.  Callahan was serving as the assistant head coach and offensive line coach.  He has been with the franchise since 2015. Washington is 0-5 this season.

 

MLB> In the Major League Baseball playoffs yesterday. Tampa Bay beat Houston 10-3.  The Astros still lead the series 2-1.  Game four is coming up tonight in Tampa.  In other action, St. Louis forced a fifth and deciding game in their series with Atlanta with a 5-4 win yesterday.  Washington beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-1 to force a fifth game in their series.  The New York Yankees finished a three game sweep of Minnesota with a 5-1 win yesterday.
