Local Sports 10-9-2018

Nebraska has dropped two spots to number five in the latest AVCA Coaches Poll.  The Huskers are 14-2 on the season.  BYU remains number one followed by Stanford, Minnesota, Texas and Nebraska.  Rounding out the top ten are Pittsburgh, Illinois, Wisconsin, Penn State and Creighton.

 

Nebraska-Kearney has moved up to number three in the Division II Poll.  The Lopers are 22-1.  Cal State San Bernardino is ranked number one.

 

Morningside is still ranked number one in the NAIA Football Coaches Top 25 Poll.  Northwestern is third.

 

Nebraska men’s basketball coach Tim Miles announced last night that Karrington Davis will miss the entire 2018-2019 season after suffering an Achilles injury in practice last week.  The 6-foot-six guard will redshirt this season and will still have four years of eligibility remaining.  Davis played his senior season at national power Montverde Academy in Florida as the team went 35-0 and won the Geico High Schools Nationals in 2018.

 

Lincoln Southwest is the leader after the first day of the Class A Girls Golf Championships at the Norfolk Country Club.  The Silver Hawks have a team score of 341.    Kearney is 11th with a 393.  Jalea Culliver of Omaha Marion and Kaitlyn Hanna of Omaha Westside are tied for the individual lead with a 76.

 

Omaha Duchesne leads in Class B with a score of 330.  Aurora is 5th with a 422.  Hastings is 7th with a 434.  Anna Boor of Omaha Duchesne has the individual lead with a 74.  Danica Badura of Aurora is 2nd with a 77.  Haylee O’Day of Adams Central is 8th with an 88.  Anna Cafferty of Hastings High is tied for 12th with a 92.

 

Cozad and Ogallala are tied for the Class C team lead at the Class C Championships at River Edge in North Platte.  Both teams shot a 390 on Monday.  Kearney Catholic is 4th with a 397.  Harley Hiltibrand of Ogallala and Kenzey Kanno of Mitchell are tied for the lead with an 83.  Addison Mitchell of Kearney Catholic is tied for 7th with a 90.

 

At the Lou Platte Conference volleyball tournament last night, Doniphan/Trumbull beat Central City, Wood River got by Arcadia/Loup City, Centura defeated Ord and St. Paul beat Gibbon.  Tonight, Doniphan/Trumbull will play Centura at 6:00pm followed by St. Paul against Wood River at 7:00pm.  We’ll have the action on Power 99, KKPR 98.9FM.

 

NFL> Drew Brees became the NFL’s all time passing leader last night as the New Orleans Saints beat Washington 43-19.  Brees broke Peyton Mannings record of 71-thousand 940 career passing yards with a 62 yard touchdown  to rookie receiver Tre’Quan Smith in the second quarter.  Brees finished 23 of 26 for 363 yards and three touchdowns.

 

Washington Redskins running back Adrian Peterson suffered a dislocated shoulder in last night’s game, but was optimistic he wouldn’t miss any time.  An MRI is scheduled for today.  Peterson finished with four carries for 6 yards and two catches of 36 yards.  He did not touch the ball in the second half.  Peterson also injured his knee in the first quarter, causing himn to be evaluated by doctors on the sideline.

 

MLB> In the Major League Baseball playoffs last night, Houston beat Cleveland 11-3 to wrap up the American League Division Series in three games.  Boston beat the New York Yankees 16-1 in the other game to take a two games to one lead.  Game four is set for tonight at 7:07pm in New York.  In the National League Division Series, the Los Angeles Dodgers beat Atlanta 6-2.  The Dodgers win that series three games to one.
