Local Sports 11-13-2019

The second College Football Playoff rankings of the 2019 season have LSU and Ohio State in the first two spots followed by Clemson and Georgia.  LSU jumped to the top spot after beating Alabama last week.  The Crimson Tide is now fifth in the college football rankings followed by Oregon, Utah, Minnesota, Penn State and Oklahoma.

 

The Nebraska football team has two new blackshirts.  Sophomore defensive lineman Damian Jackson and freshman outside linebacker Garrett Nelson earned their coveted jersey’s yesterday.  Nelson has a regular role in Nebraska’s defense, but isn’t a starter.  Jackson has appeared in just two career games and made his season debut against Purdue on special teams, logging a pair of tackles.

 

The Nebraska volleyball team will play at Michigan State tonight.  The Huskers have won four matches in a row to improve to 20-3 on the season, 12-2 in the Big Ten.  The Spartans are 14-10, 5-9 in the conference and have lost ten straight matches to the Huskers.  First serve will be at 6:00pm.  We’ll have it on “The Breeze,” KLIQ 94.5FM beginning with the pre-game show at 5:30pm.

 

Hastings College will play Midland in the finals of the GPAC Women’s Soccer Tournament.  The Broncos beat Jamestown 2-0 last night while the Warriors shut out Briar Cliff 2-0.  The championship match is set for Friday in Fremont.  The Hastings College men will play Briar Cliff for the GPAC Tournament championship tomorrow night at Lloyd Wilson Field.  The Broncos are playing in the finals for the 12th straight season.  Game time will be at 7:00pm.

 

The Hastings College basketball teams will open the conference season tonight at Doane.  The Bronco women are 4-0 on the season.  The men are 4-1.  The women’s game will be at 6:00pm followed by the men’s game at 8:00pm.  We’ll have the action on 1230AM KHAS beginning with the pre-game show at 5:45pm

 

The semifinals of the GPAC Volleyball Tournament will be played tonight.  The College of St. Mary’s will play at Midland and Concordia is at Jamestown.  The finals are set for Saturday.

 

The winners in the Class D1 state football playoffs last night included Osceola High Plains, Cross County, Burwell and Dundy County Stratton. The D-2 winners were Overton, Pleasanton, Humphrey St. Francis and Falls City Sacred Heart.  The semifinals will be played on Monday.  The semifinal games in Classes A, B, C1, C-2 and Six Man are set for Friday.

 

Big upset in college basketball last night Evansville beat number one ranked Kentucky 67-64.  It’s the first win over a number one ranked team in the program’s history for the Purple Aces.  Evansville was picked to finish eighth in the Missouri Valley Conference this year following an 11-21 season a year ago.  Also in the top 25 last night, 14th ranked Oregon beat 13th ranked Memphis 82-74.  Creighton lost to Michigan 79-69.  The Jays are now 1-1 and will host Louisiana Tech on Saturday.

 

Gabe Kapler has been hired as manager of the San Francisco Giants, a month after being fired from the same job at Philadelphia.  Kapler received a three year contract to replace Bruce Bochy, who retired at the end of the season following 13 years and three championships with San Francisco.  .
