Local Sports 11-4-2019

The top five teams remain the same in the latest AP College Football Poll.  LSU is ranked number one followed by Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson and Penn State.  Georgia moves up to number six after their 24-17 win over Florida on Saturday.  Oregon is 7th followed by Utah, Oklahoma and Florida.

 

Nebraska is now 4-5 on the season, 2-3 in the Big Ten after Saturday’s 31-27 loss to Purdue.  Adrian Martinez returned from an injury and completed 22 of 39 passes for 247 yards.  He also rushed 12 times for 58 yards and two touchdowns.  JD Spielman caught six passes for 123 yards.  Purdue outgained Nebraska 449-375.  The Huskers will be off this weekend.  They’ll return to action on November 16th against Wisconsin.

 

The Nebraska volleyball team beat Penn State on Saturday at the Devaney Center.  The scores were 25-18, 18-25, 25-21, 21-25, 15-13.  Maddie Kubik led the way with 15 kills and nine digs.  Nebraska is now 18-3 on the season, 10-2 in the conference.  They’ll play host to Northwestern on Wednesday.

 

The Nebraska women’s basketball team beat Rogers State 97-33 in an exhibition game on Saturday at Pinnacle Bank Arena.  The Huskers out rebounded the Hillcats 73-27.  Sam Haiby, Ashton Verbeek and Kate Cain scored 12 points apiece.  Nebraska will open the season on Wednesday against Alabama A & M.  Tip-off will be at noon.

 

The Hastings College football team lost their sixth straight game on Saturday falling to Dordt 70-28.  The Defenders outgained the Broncos 720-456.  Hastings is now 2-6 on the season, 1-6 in the conference.  They’ll play at Northwestern on Saturday.  Kickoff will be at 1:00pm.

 

The Hastings College women’s basketball team beat Kansas Wesleyan 77-65 on Saturday at Lynn Farrell Arena.  Gabby Grasso had 18 points and eight rebounds for the Broncos.  Hastings is now 3-0 on the season and will play at Bethel College on Tuesday.

 

The Hastings College men’s basketball team will play at Sterling College of Kansas tonight after going 1-1 in the Cattle Classic in Seward over the weekend.  The Broncos are 3-1 on the season.  Tip-off with be at 7:30pm.  We’ll have it on 1230AM KHAS beginning with the pre-game show at 7:15pm.

 

The Hastings College volleyball team lost to #1 ranked Northwestern on Saturday.  The scores were 25-17, 25-20, 25-13.  Lucy Skoch had eight kills for the Broncos.  Hastings is now 10-15, 5-10 in the conference.  They’ll play at Mount Marty on Wednesday.

 

The Hastings College soccer teams beat Northwestern on Saturday in Oranage City.  The men won 7-0 while the women won 2-0.  The men will play Concordia in the first round of the GPAC Post Season Tournament on Wednesday at Lloyd Wilson Field.  Game time will be at 7:00pm.  The women will host Northwestern on Thursday beginning at 7:00pm.

 

The Nebraska-Kearney football team lost to Central Missouri 47-40 on Saturday.  The Lopers are now 5-4 on the season and will play at Missouri Western State on Saturday.  Kickoff will be at 1:00pm.  The volleyball team improved to 26-0 on the season with wins over Northwest Missouri State and Central Misssuri over the weekend.  The Lopers will play at Fort Hays State on Tuesday.

 

Hastings High and Hastings St. Cecilia won district volleyball titles on Saturday and will play in the state tournament beginning Thursday in Lincoln.  The Tigers beat Aurora in four games while the Hawkettes swept Bridgeport.  Hastings High will play top seeded Omaha Skutt on Thursday at Pinnacle Bank Arena.  First serve will be at 1:30pm.  The Hawkettes will play Arcadia Loup City at 1:30pm at Lincoln Southwest.  Giltner is also in the field.  The Hornets will play top seeded Lawrence Nelson on Thursday at 1:30pm at Lincoln Northeast.

 

NFL>  In the NFL last night, Baltimore beat New England 37-20.  It’s the first loss of the season for the Patriots.  Tonight, you get Dallas at the New York Giants.  Kickoff will be at 7:15pm.  Pre-game show begins at 6:30pm on ESPN Tri Cities.

 

FB>  Florida State has fired head football coach Willie Taggart following the Seminoles 27-10 loss to Miami on Saturday.  Taggart was  in his second season with Florida State.  He left Oregon after one year to coach the Seminoles.  He coached at South Florida for four seasons.  Taggart was 9-12 with Florida State and the Seminoles were 0-5 against in state rivals Miami and Florida and ACC rival Clemson.
