Local Sports 11-6-2019

The top four teams in the first edition of the College Football Playoff rankings are Ohio State, LSU, Alabama and Penn State.  Defending national champion Clemson is number five.  It’s the first time in 25 rankings that Clemson is not included in the first four teams.  Rounding out the top ten are Georgia, Oregon, Utah, Oklahoma and Florida.

 

The Fred Hoiberg era got off to a disappointing start with a 66-47 loss to UC Riverside last night at Pinnacle Bank Arena.  It’s the first loss for the Huskers in a season opener since 1980.  The Highlanders hit 41 percent of their shots, including 12 of 25 from three point range.  Nebraska hit only 29 percent of their shots, including 6 of 26 from beyond the arc.  The Huskers made only 9 of 19 free throws.  Cam Mack scored 11 points for Nebraska.  The Huskers will return to action on Saturday against Southern Utah.  Tip-off will be at 1:00pm.

 

The Nebraska women’s basketball team will open the season with a game against Alabama A & M today.  The Huskers beat Rogers State 97-33 in their lone exhibition game of the season at Pinnacle Bank Arena.  Tip-off will be at noon.  We’ll have it on 1230AM KHAS beginning with the pre-game show at 11:45am.

 

The Nebraska volleyball team will host Northwestern tonight at the Devaney Center.  The Huskers are 18-3 on the season, 10-2 in the Big Ten.  The Wildcats are 10-14, 1-11 in the conference.  First serve will be at 8:00pm. Pre-game show begins at 7:30pm on 1230AM KHAS.

 

The Hastings College women’s basketball team is now 4-0 on the season after last night’s 77-53 win over Bethel College of Kansas.  The Bronco defense forced 31 turnovers in the game.  Kaitlyn Schmit led the way with 19 points, Shandra Farmer had 17, Taylor Beacom had 12 and Ali Smith had 10 points.  Hastings will open the conference season at Doane next Wednesday.

 

The Nebraska-Kearney volleyball team beat Fort Hays State 25-12, 25-12, 25-17 last night in Hays, Kansas.  Kamryn Schuler had a team high 12 kills for the Lopers.  Mary Katherine Wolfe recorded her 1,000th career dig.  The Lopers are now 27-0 and will play Missouri Western State on Saturday.

 

The state high school football playoffs continue tonight.  Pleasanton will play at Kenesaw.  The Bulldogs are 7-2 on the season.  The Blue Devils are 8-1.  Kickoff will be at 6:00pm.  We’ll have it on “The Breeze,” KLIQ 94.5FM beginning with the pre-game show at 5:30pm.

 

In some other games, Cross County will play at Bruning Davenport Shickley and Lawrence Nelson is at Humphrey St. Francis.

 

COLLEGE BB> In college basketball last night, 2nd ranked Kentucky beat top ranked Michigan State 69-62 in the Champions Classic in New York.  Tyrese Maxey came off of the bench to score 26 points for the Wildcats.

 

Elsewhere in the top 10, 5th ranked Louisville beat Miami 87-74, 4th ranked Duke got by 3rd ranked Kansas 68-66, 6th ranked Florida opened the season with a 74-59 win over North Florida, 7th ranked Maryland downed Holy Cross 95-71,8th ranked Gonzaga took care of Alabama State 95-64 and 10th ranked Villanova beat Army 97-54.  .
