Local Sports 11-7-2019

The 7th ranked Nebraska volleyball team shut down Northwestern in a 25-18, 25-7, 25-18 sweep last night at the Devaney Center.  Lexi Sun had 11 kills for the Huskers.  Nebraska is now 19-3 on the season, 11-2 in the Big Ten Conference.  They’ll play at Iowa on Saturday.


The Nebraska women’s basketball team opened the season with a 68-46 win over Alabama A & M yesterday at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Hannah Whitish scored 12 points on four three pointers to lead four Huskers in double figures.  Kate Cain had 10 points, seven rebounds and eight blocked shots.  Ashtyn Veerbeek and Leigha Brown also scored 10 points apiece. Nebraska will play at Missouri on Sunday.


The Hastings College volleyball wrapped up the season with a win at Mount Marty last night.  The Broncos won the match 23-25, 25-12, 25-21, 25-22.  Emily Krolikowski led the way with 15 kills.  Hastings ends the season 11-15.  They finished 6-10 in the conference.


The GPAC post season volleyball tournament will get underway on Saturday.  The College of St. Mary’s will play at Northwestern, Dordt is at Midland, Concordia will play host to Doane and Morningside is at Jamestown.


The Hastings College men’s soccer team beat Concordia 3-0 last night in the quarterfinals of the GPAC Tournament.  The Broncos are now 14-2-2 on the season and will play Jamestown in the semifinals on Saturday.  The Jimmies upset Midland last night 2-1.  In the other games, Morningside shut out Mount Marty 2-0 and Briar Cliff got by Northwestern 3-2.


The Hastings College women’s soccer team will play Northwestern tonight in the GPAC quarterfinals.  Game time will be at 7:00pm at Lloyd Wilson Field.


In the state high school football playoffs last night, Pleasanton scored 20 points in the fourth quarter to beat Kenesaw 27-14.  Tyson Denkert rushed for 183 yards for the Blue Devils.  In the other games in Class D-2, Overton beat Garden County 36-12, Central Valley rolled past Elwood 50-24, Twin Loup defeated Mullen 36-14, Humphrey St. Francis beat Lawrence Nelson 60-14, Plainview got by Johnson Brock 36-28, Falls City Sacred Heart downed Clarkson-Leigh 56-6 and Bloomfield beat Hartington-Newcastle 50-20.


In Class D-1, Howells/Dodge beat Lutheran High Northeast 56-22, Osceola High Plains defeated Creighton 46-32, Tri County blasted Elmwood Murdock 68-8, Cross County got by Bruning Davenport Shickley 20-6, Cambridge ran over Neligh-Oakdale 62-14, Burwell beat Elm Creek 50-13, Arcadia/Loup City downed Sutherland 72-14 and Dundy County Stratton got by Fullerton 20-18.


The state high school volleyball tournament begins today.Hastings High will be making their first tournament appearance since 2008 when they play top seeded Omaha Skutt today at Pinnacle Bank Arena.  First serve will be at 1:30pm.  We’ll have it on 1230AM KHAS beginning with the pre-game show at 1:20pm.


Hastings St. Cecilia will also be in action today.  The Hawkettes are the number one seed in Class C-2 and will play Arcadia/Loup City at 1:30pm this afternoon at Lincoln Southwest.  St. Cecilia will be playing in the state tournament for the 24th time and will be seeking their eighth state title.  We’ll have the match on “The Breeze,” KLIQ 94.5FM beginning at 1:20pm.


In other action, Giltner will play Lawrence Nelson today in the first round of the Class D-2 state tournament at Lincoln Northeast.  That match also begins at 1:30pm.  We’ll have it on ESPN 1550 KICS beginning with the pre-game show at 1:20pm.


We’ll have two games on Power 99 KKPR today, at 1:30pm, Pleasanton will play Central Valley followed by Overton and Archbishop Bergen at 3:30pm.
