Local Sports 11-8-2018

In a back-and-fourth battle between 2018 NCAA Tournament teams, two time defending Missouri Valley Conference champion Drake made the plays down the stretch to steal an 83-77 win over the Nebraska women’s basketball team last night at Pinnacle Bank Arena.  Freshman Sam Haiby led the Huskers with 13 points off the bench, while juniors Hannah Whitish and Nicea Eliely added 10 points apiece.  Nebraska is now 0-1 on the season and will play host to USC Upstate on Sunday.  Tip-off will be at 11:00am.  We’ll have it on “The Breeze,” KLIQ 94.5FM beginning with the pre-game show at 10:45am.

 

The 6th ranked Nebraska volleyball team swept Iowa last night in Iowa City.  The scores were 25-15, 25-22, 25-13.  Lexi Sun had 12 kills for the Huskers.  Mikaela Foecke added 13 kills and three blocks.  She also became the eighth Husker in school history to reach 15-hundred career kills.  Nebraska is now 19-6 on the season, 10-5 in the Big Ten Conference.  They’ll play at Michigan on Saturday.  First serve will be at 6:00pm.  We’ll have it on 1230AM KHAS beginning with the pre-game show at 5:30pm.

 

Kevin Miller scored a career high 30 points to lead the Hastings College men’s basketball team to an 87-81 win over Doane last night at Lynn Farrell Arena.  Miller was 11 of 22 from the field with one three pointer.  He also hit 4 of 7 free throws.  Bart Hiscock chipped in with 15 points.  Shane Chamberlain had 10.  Hastings is now 5-1 on the season, 1-0 in the conference.  They’ll play host to Mount Marty on Saturday.

 

The Hastings College women’s basketball team raced out to a 22-4 first quarter lead and never looked back in a 90-47 win over the Tigers.  Shandra Farmer scored 24 points for the Broncos, Emma Grenfell had 12 and Halle Plumbtree came off the bench to scored 11 points and grab seven rebounds. Hastings is now 2-1 on the season, 1-0 in the conference.  They’ll also play host to Mount Marty on Saturday.

 

The Hastings College volleyball team lost to Northwestern last night in the semifinals of the GPAC Tournament.  The scores were 14-25, 25-22, 19-25, 23-25.  Lucy Skoch and Sage Meyer had 10 kills apiece for the Broncos.  Hastings is now 19-6 on the season.  Next up, is a trip to the NAIA National Tournament.

 

The Hastings College women’s soccer team will play Concordia tonight for the GPAC Tournament Championship.  The Broncos are 15-0-3 on the season.  The Bulldogs are 13-2-5.  Game time will be at 7:00pm at Lloyd Wilson Field.

 

Hastings St. Cecilia will play Blue Hill today in the opening round of the Class C-2 State Volleyball Tournament in Lincoln.  The Hawkettes are 22-10 on the season.  The Bobcats are 29-2.  Blue Hill has already beaten St. Cecilia twice this season including once in the C2-10 subdistrict tournament.  The match gets underway at 1:30pm at Lincoln Southwest.  We’ll have it on “The Breeze,” KLIQ 94.5FM beginning with the pre-game show at 1:20pm.

 

Also today, Northwest will play top seeded Elkhorn South at 3:30pm at Pinnacle Bank Arena, St. Paul will play Syracuse at 1:30pm at Lincoln North Star.  Also at Lincoln North Star, Grand Island Central Catholic will play Bishop Neumann at 5:30pm.  Superior will battle Freeman at 5:30pm at Lincoln Southwest.

 

NFL> There’s NFL football tonight as Carolina plays at Pittsburgh.  The Panthers are 6-2.  The Steelers are 5-2-1.  Kickoff will be at 7:20pm.  We’ll have it on ESPN 1550 KICS beginning with the pre-game show at 7:00pm.
