Local Sports 11-8-2019

Hastings St. Cecilia has advanced to the semi-finals of the Class C-2 state volleyball tournament after a victory over Arcadia/Loup City yesterday.  The Hawkettes beat the Rebels 25-10, 25-12, 25-20.  Katherine Hamburger led the way with 11 kills, two ace serves and two blocks.  St. Cecilia is now 33-3 on the season and will play Lutheran High Northeast at1:00pm this afternoon at Pinnacle Bank Arena.  We’ll have the match on “The Breeze,” KLIQ 94.5FM beginning with the pre-game show at 12:50pm.  In the other semi-final match, Grand Island Central Catholic will play Superior at 3:00pm.

 

It took top seeded Omaha Skutt only 48 minutes to beat Hastings High in the Class B State Tournament yesterday.  The Skyhawks won the match 25-2, 25-5, 25-6.  The Tigers end the season 22-12. In Class D-2, Lawrence Nelson beat Giltner 25-10, 25-8, 25-14.  The Hornets end the season 21-11.

 

In the other games today, in Class A, Millard North will play Gretna at 5:00pm followed by Papillion LaVista South against Lincoln Pius at 7:00pm.  In Class B, Omaha Skutt will play Norris at 5:00pm followed by Waverly and Omaha Duchesne at 7:00pm.  In Class C-1, it’ll be St. Paul against Broken Bow at 1:00pm followed by Wahoo against Lincoln Lutheran at 3:00pm.  In the Class D-1 semi-finals this morning, Pleasanton will play Fremont Bergen at 9:00am followed by Diller Odell against Hartington Cedar Catholic at 11:00am.  In Class D-2, Lawrence Nelson will play Humphrey St. Francis at 9:00am followed by Wynot against Bruning Davenport Shickley at 11:00am.  All the games will be played at Pinnacle Bank Area.  The finals will be played tomorrow at the Devaney Center.

 

Hastings High will battle Waverly tonight in the state high school football playoffs.  The Tigers are 8-2 on the season after beating McCook 42-7 in the opening round.  The Vikings are 9-1 after knocking off Omaha Gross 49-20.  Kickoff will be at 7:00pm.  We’ll have it on 1230AM KHAS beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45pm.

 

Adams Central will play at Aurora.  The Patriots beat the Huskies 24-8 to begin the season.  The last time the two teams have played in the playoffs was in the 2009 semifinals when Aurora beat Adams Central 28-7.  Kickoff will be at 7:00pm  We’ll have it on ESPN 1550 KICS beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45pm.

 

On “The Breeze,” KLIQ 94.5FM, it’s Battle Creek at Sutton beginning at 6:30pm.  On Power 99 KKPR, 98.9FM, Aquinas Catholic will play at St. Paul.

 

In some other games, Grand Island will play at Millard South beginning at 4:00pm this afternoon, Omaha Roncalli will play at Northwest beginning at 7:00pm and Doniphan/Trumbull is at Oakland Craig.  Kickoff will be at 7:00pm.

 

The Hastings College women’s soccer team beat Northwestern 5-1 last night in the quarterfinals of the GPAC Tournament.  The Broncos are now 15-3 on the season and will play Jamestown on Tuesday in the semifinals.  The Jimmies beat Concordia last night 4-0.  In the other games, Midland shut out Morningside 3-0 and Briar Cliff got by Dordt 3-2.

 

The men’s semifinals will be played tomorrow, Briar Cliff will play at Morningside beginning at 6:00pm while Jamestown will play at Hastings beginning at 7:00pm at Lloyd Wilson Field.

 

NFL>  In the NFL last night, Oakland beat the Los Angeles Chargers 26-24.  Josh Jacobs scored on an 18 yard run with 1:02 remaining to win it for the Raiders.
