Local Sports 12-2-2019

LSU is still ranked number one in the latest AP College Football Poll.  The Tigers are 12-0 on the season after Saturday’s 50-7 win over Texas A & M.  Ohio State is second followed by Clemson, Georgia and Utah.  Rounding out the top ten are Oklahoma, Florida, Baylor, Alabama and Wisconsin.


Nebraska finished the season 5-7, 3-6 in the Big Ten Conference after Friday’s 27-24 loss to Iowa.  It’s the third straight season Nebraska will miss out on the post season.


The Nebraska volleyball team was selected as the number five overall seed for the NCAA Tournament and will host the first and second round games this weekend at the Devaney Center.  The Huskers will open the tournament on Friday at 7:00pm against Ball State.  The winner will face either Northern Iowa or Missouri on Saturday at 7:00pm.


Nebraska closed out the regular season with a three game sweep of Ohio State on Saturday.  The scores were 25-15, 25-16, 25-19.  Lexi Sun had 12 kills for the Huskers. Nebraska is 25-4 overall.  They finished in a three way tie for second place in the conference with a 17-3 mark.


The Nebraska women’s basketball team went 2-0 in the South Point Shootout in Las Vegas over the weekend.  The Huskers beat USC 67-54 and Sacred Heart 72-49.  Nebraska is now 7-1 on the season and will play Duke on Wednesday in the Big 10/ACC Challenge.  Tip-off will be at 6:00pm at Pinnacle Bank Arena.


The Nebraska men’s basketball team is 4-3 on the season.  The Huskers will play at Georgia Tech on Wednesday in the Big 10/ACC Challenge.  Tip-off will be at 6:15pm.


Creighton is also in the NCAA Volleyball Tournament.  The Jays will play Iowa State on Friday at 4:30pm in Minneapolis.  The winner will play either Fairfield or Minnesota on Saturday.


The Hastings College women’s basketball team went 2-0 in the C3 Hotel Classic over the weekend.  The Broncos beat Haskell Indian Nations University 72-45 on Friday and Bellevue University 83-54 on Saturday.  Hastings is now 10-0 on the season and will play host to the College of St. Mary’s on Wednesday.


The Hastings College men’s basketball team is 5-4 on the season.  They lost an exhibition game to Pittsburgh State on Friday 72-69.  The Broncos will play Nebraska Christian College tomorrow night at Lynn Farrell Area.  Tip-off will be at 7:00pm.


The Hastings College men’s soccer team is in Irvine, California getting ready for the NAIA National Championships Round of 16.  The Broncos will play 4th seeded Westmont College tomorrow night at 8:30pm.


The Nebraska-Kearney basketball teams will host Fort Hays State tomorrow night at the Health and Sports Center.  Game times will be at 5:30pm and at 7:30pm.


The UNK volleyball team will host the NCAA Central Regional beginning Thursday at the Health and Sports Center.  The Lopers will play Oklahoma Baptist in the opening round.  First serve will be at 7:30pm.


NFL> In the late NFL game last night, Houston beat the New England Patriots 28-22.  Deshaun Watson threw three touchdown passes for the Texans and had his first career touchdown reception.  Tom Brady completed 24 of 47 passes for 326 yards with an interception.  He was also sacked three times.  Tonight, it’s Minnesota at Seattle.  Kickoff will be at 7:15pm.  We’ll have it on ESPN Tri Cities beginning with the pre-game show at 6:30pm.
