Local Sports 12-3-2019

Nebraska remains number six in the latest AVCA Coaches Poll.  The Huskers are 25-4 on the season and will play Ball State in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday.  Baylor is ranked number one followed by Pittsburgh, Stanford, Texas and Wisconsin.  Rounding out the top ten are Nebraska, Minnesota, Penn State, Washington and Colorado State.


Three outgoing Nebraska seniors have been invited to play in the East-West Shrine Bowl football game on January 18th in St. Petersburg, Florida.  Lamar Jackson, Carlos Davis and Khalil Davis will play in the game.  Jackson had the best season of his career in 2019, finishing with three interceptions, 12 passes defended and two forced fumbles.  Khalil Davis led the team with eight sacks.  Khalil’s twin brother, Carlos, had four sacks.  The game will kickoff at 2:00pm.


The Hastings College men’s basketball team will play host to Nebraska Christian tonight at Lynn Farrell Arena.  The Broncos are 5-4 on the season and will be looking to break a three game losing streak.  Nebraska Christian is 5-3.  Tip-off will be at 7:00pm.  We’ll have it on 1230AM KHAS beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45pm.


The Hastings College men’s soccer team is in Irvine California for the NAIA National Championships Round of 16.  The Broncos will play 3rd seeded Westmont College tonight at 8:30pm.


The Nebraska-Kearney basketball teams will be in action tonight.  The Lopers will host Fort Hays State at the Health and Sports Center.  The Loper men are 3-3 on the season.  The women are 6-0.  Gametimes will be at 5:30pm and at 7:30pm.


Five teams from the Great Plains Athletic Conference will play their first game of pool play today at the NAIA Volleyball National Championships in Sioux City. Jamestown will battle Xavier University at 1:00pm, Morningside will play Park University at 3:00pm, Northwestern will take on Martin Methodist at 6:30pm, and Concordia will take on Montana Tech of the University of Montana at 8:30pm.  Also at 8:30pm, St. Mary’s will play Grand View.


Semifinal matchups have been set for the NAIA Football Championship Series.  On Saturday, Grand View of Iowa will play at Morningside and Lindsay Wilson of Kentucky will be at Marian of Indiana.  All four teams are undefeated.  The winners advance to the National Championship game on December 21st at Eddie Robinson Stadium in Ruston, Louisiana.


NFL> In the NFL last night, Seattle beat Minnesota 37-30. The Seahawks rushed for 218 yards in the game, the most allowed by the Vikings this season.  Seattle is now 10-2.  Minnesota falls to 8-4.


COLLEGE FOOTBALL>  Washington head football coach Chris Petersen will step down after the Huskies bowl game and will be replaced by defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake.  Petersen will remain at the school in a leadership advisory role within the athletic department. He’s been the head coach of the Huskies for the past six years.  Petersen has a career coaching mark of 146-38 including eight seasons at Boise State.


COLLEGE BASKETBALL> Louisville has taken over the top spot in the latest AP Men’s College Basketball Poll.  The Cardinals are 7-0 on the season.  Kansas is second followed by Maryland, Michigan and Virginia.  Rounding out the top ten are Ohio State, North Carolina, Kentucky, Gonzaga and Duke.


Stanford leads the women’s poll.  Louisville is second followed by Oregon, UConn and Oregon State.
