Local Sports 2-11-2019

The Nebraska men’s basketball team lost to Purdue 81-62 on Saturday.  That’s the seventh straight loss for the Huskers.  Thomas Allen hit five three pointers and finished with 18 points.  James Palmer had 17.  Nebraska is now 13-11 on the season, 3-10 in the Big Ten Conference.  They’ll play host to Minnesota on Wednesday.

 

The Nebraska women’s basketball team beat Purdue 67-61 yesterday at Pinnacle Bank Arena.  Leigha Brown erupted for a career high 30 points for the Huskers.  Nebraska is now 11-13 on the season, 6-7 in the conference.  They’ll play at Maryland on Thursday.

 

The Hastings College men’s basketball team lost to Northwestern 88-85 on Saturday in Orange City.  Bart Hiscock had 25 points for the Broncos, Logan Cale had 17, Zach Johnson 16 and Shane Chamberlain had 12.  Northwestern hit 13 three pointers in the game and shot 50 percent from the field.  Hastings is now 17-11 on the season, 8-10 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.  They’ll play host to Midland on Wednesday.

 

The Hastings College women’s basketball team lost to Northwestern 97-75 on Saturday.  The Red Raiders hit 66 percent of their field goals in the game including 8 of 15 from beyond the arc.  Taylor Beacom had 17 points for the Broncos, Sophia Pankratz had 14, Harper Sheets and Shandra Farmer had 11 points apiece,  Hastings is now 16-11 on the season, 11-9 in the conference.  They’ll also play Midland on Wednesday at Lynn Farrell Arena.

 

Hastings College finished sixth in Cheer and fourth in Dance at the GPAC Cheer and Dance Championships on Saturday in Hastings.  Midland won the title in both divisions.

 

The Nebraska-Kearney basketball teams were in action on Saturday.  The men beat Pittsburgh State 65-63 to improve to 8-14 on the season, 3-10 in the MIAA.  The women lost to Pittsburgh State 68-42.  The Lopers are now 13-9, 6-7 in the conference.

 

At the Heartland Hoops Classic on Saturday, Omaha Skutt beat Adams Central 71-50.  The Patriots are now 15-6.  Hastings High beat Freeman 45-40.  The Tigers are now 13-5.  In some other games, Grand Island Central Catholic downed North Bend Central 52-43 and Aurora knocked off Cozad 72-52.

 

Girls sub district basketball tournaments get started tonight.  Hastings High will play York at the B-6 Tournament at Northwest.  Tip-off will be at 7:30pm.  Minden will play Gibbon at Kearney High.  Sutton will play Sandy Creek at Fairbury.  Doniphan/Trumbull will take on Franklin at Adams Central.  We’ll have that game on “The Breeze,’ KLIQ 94.5FM beginning at 5:45pm.
