Nebraska is losing an assistant football coach. Defensive line coach Mike Dawson will become the outside linebackers coach for the New York Giants in the NFL. Dawson has been an assistant coach for more than 20 years at both the NFL and college ranks. He went to Central Florida with Scott Frost prior to the 2016 season, then followed the staff to Lincoln during the last offseason. Prior to going to Central Florida, Dawson was on the staff of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Nebraska running back Maurice Washington is in some trouble with the law. Washington faces a felony charge of distribution of child pornography in California. According to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office, Washington has been charged in a warrant with felony possession of material, such as a photo or video, involving someone under the age of 18 engaging in or simulating sexual conduct. He’s also charge with a misdemeanor of sharing the material without their permission and with the potential to cause emotional distress. NBC Bay Area reported Monday that Washington had allegedly sent a former girlfriend a video that showed her in sex acts with two 17 year old boys. The girl was 15 years old at the time the video was taken in 2016, and Washington allegedly texted it back to her in March of 2018.
Sutton offensive lineman Garrett Nuss will walk on at Nebraska. Nuss is the 25th known walk-on in Nebraska’s 2019 class and the 21st in state walk-on. The 6-foot-five, 240 pound Nuss played both offensive tackle and center for the Mustangs. Nuss chose to walk on at Nebraska over scholarship offers from Nebraska Wesleyan, Midland, Concordia, Hastings and Doane.
Nebraska’s Leigha Brown claimed a spot on the Big Ten Women’s Basketball Weekly Honor Roll following her 30 point performance in Sunday’s win over Purdue at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Brown put up the first 30 point game by a Husker in more than two seasons by going 8 of 14 from the field including 4 of 6 from three point range. She was also 10 of 12 from the free throw line. Nebraska will play at 7th ranked Maryland on Thursday.
For the fourth straight year, the York Dukes have ended the season for the Hastings High girls basketball team. York beat the Tigers 37-35 last night in the B-6 Subdistrict Tournament at Northwest High School. Dacey Sealey had 16 points for the Tigers. Hastings ends the season 8-10. York will play Northwest in the finals tonight. The Vikings beat Aurora in the other semifinal game 51-45.
