Local Sports 2-6-2019

The Nebraska men’s basketball team will attempt to break a five game losing streak when they play host to 24th ranked Maryland tonight at Pinnacle Bank Arena.  The Huskers are 13-9 on the season, 3-8 in the Big Ten Conference after Saturday’s 71-64 loss to Illinois.  The Terrapins are 17-6, 8-4 in the league after losing to Wisconsin 69-61.  Maryland beat Nebraska 74-72 earlier this year in College Park.  Tip-off will be at 6:01pm.  We’ll have it on 1230AM KHAS and “The Breeze,” KLIQ 94.5FM beginning with the pre-game show at 5:00pm.

 

Hastings College is back in the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Coaches Top 25 Poll.  The Broncos are ranked 24th after winning six straight games.  Concordia is ranked number one, Northwestern is 2nd, Dakota Wesleyan is 5th, Dordt is 12th and Morningside is 14th.

 

Oklahoma Wesleyan leads the men’s poll.  Morningside is 2nd, Briar Cliff is 12th, Jamestown is 15th and Dakota Wesleyan is 18th.  Hastings will play at Northwestern on Saturday.  The women’s game will be at 2:00pm with the men to follow at 4:00pm.  We’ll have coverage on 1230AM KHAS beginning with the pre-game show at 1:45pm.

 

McKinsey Long hit a driving layup with 8.5 seconds remaining to give Hastings High a 36-35 win over Adams Central last night at the Patriots Gym.  That was the only lead of the game for the Tigers.  Long finished with 12 points.  Libby Trausch and Jessica Babcock scored nine points apiece for Adams Central.  The Tigers are now 8-7 on the season.  The Patriots fall to 14-7.

 

The Adams Central boy’s basketball team beat Hastings High 59-56.  Haggen Hilgendorf had 24 points, six rebounds and one blocked shot for the Patriots.  Nolan Sughroue had 18 points.  Connor Creech scored 17 points for the Tigers.  Jacob Schroeder had 14.  Adams Central is now 14-5.  Hastings High falls to 11-5.

 

Elsewhere in boys basketball, Blue Hill beat Bertrand 59-49, Doniphan/Trumbull rolled past Thayer Central 75-41, Kearney Catholic edged Centura 58-56, Kenesaw ran past Red Cloud 60-23, Lawrence Nelson beat Harvard 38-35, Northwest downed Boone Central/Newman Grove 66-43, Sandy Creek stopped Fillmore Central 72-52, Sutton beat Wilber Clatonia 51-38 and York defeated Holdrege 79-45.

 

In girl’s basketball, Doniphan/Trumbull beat Thayer Central 47-41, Fillmore Central rolled past Sandy Creek 62-20, Kearney Catholic thumped Centura 65-34, Kenesaw got by Red Cloud 50-49, Northwest downed Boone Central/Newman Grove 58-44, Silver Lake defeated Shelton 42-15, Sutton knocked off Wilber Clatonia 54-39 and York blasted Holdrege 41-18.
