Local Sports 3-11-2019

The Nebraska men’s basketball team erased a 16 point second half deficit and scored 16 points in the final 47 seconds of regulation to force overtime in a 93-91 victory over Iowa yesterday at Pinnacle Bank Arena.  James Palmer Junior led the way with 27 points.  Glynn Watson Junior and Isaiah Roby had 23 points apiece.  Nebraska hit 51 percent of their field goals in the game including 13 of 26 from three point range.  The Huskers finished the regular season 16-15, 6-14 in the Big Ten Conference.

 

Nebraska will be the number 13 seed for the Big Ten Tournament that gets underway on Wednesday at the United Center in Chicago.  The Huskers will play Rutgers at 5:30pm in a play in game.  Northwestern will battle Illinois in another play in game at 8:00pm.  The top four seeds in the tournament are Michigan State, Purdue, Michigan and Wisconsin.

 

Megan Gustafson scored 26 points in the first half and finished with 45 on Sunday to lead Iowa past Maryland 90-76 in the championship game of the Women’s Big Ten Tournament.  It’s the  first women’s championship for the Hawkeyes since 2001.

 

Baylor beat the Nebraska baseball team 10-3 yesterday in Waco.  Reece Eddins was the losing pitcher.  He threw 1 1/3 innings of relief and gave up six runs and seven hits.  Mack Mueller and Andy Thomas each had three hits and three RBI’s for the Huskers.  Nebraska is now 6-7 on the season and are scheduled to face New Mexico State this weekend at Hawks Field.

 

Omaha South, Lincoln Pius, Auburn, Bancroft Rosalie/Lyons Decatur, Humphrey/Lindsey Holy Family and Johnson Brock won boys state basketball titles on Saturday.  A celebration for the St. Cecilia girls state championship will be held on Wednesday beginning at 7:00pm at the Chapman Gym.

 

Concordia will play Northwestern tonight in the semi-finals of the NAIA National Tournament in Sioux City.  The Bulldogs beat Indiana Tech 73-53 in the quarterfinals on Saturday while the Red Raiders got by the College of the Ozarks 71-70.  In the other semi-final game, Dakota Wesleyan will play Southeastern of Florida.  The Tigers beat Taylor of Indiana 75-62 in the quarterfinals while the Fire knocked off Antelope Valley of California 75-60.  The College of the Ozarks eliminated Hastings College on Friday night with a 86-55 win.  The Broncos end the season 20-13.

 

In the men’s Final Four in Sioux Falls tonight, Oregon Tech will play the College of Idaho at 6:00pm followed by Marian of Indiana against Spring Arbor of Michigan at 8:00pm.  Morningside and Briar Cliff were beaten in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
