Local Sports 3-13-2019

The Nebraska men’s basketball team will play Rutgers today in a play-in game of the Big Ten Tournament in Chicago.  The Huskers are 16-15 on the season, 6-14 in the conference.  The Scarlet Knights are 14-16, 7-13 in the league, but have wins over Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio State and Iowa this season.  Rutgers beat Nebraska earlier this year 76-69 in Piscataway, New Jersey.  Tip-off will be at 5:30pm.  We’ll have the game on 1230AM KHAS and “The Breeze,” KLIQ 94.5FM beginning with the pre-game show at 4:30pm.

 

The Nebraska baseball team is scheduled to play New Mexico State this weekend at Hawks Field.  The Huskers are 6-7 on the season after winning two of three games against Baylor over the weekend in Waco.  Friday’s game gets underway at 6:35pm.  We’ll have it on 1230AM KHAS and “The Breeze,” KLIQ 94.5FM beginning with the pre-game show at 6:04pm.

 

Nebraska-Omaha will not be going to the “Big Dance” after all.  The Mavs lost to North Dakota State 73-63 last night in the Summit League Final in Sioux Falls.  Nebraska-Omaha was looking for their first appearance ever in the NCAA Tournament.

 

Concordia won their first NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championship last night with a 67-59 win over Southeastern of Florida at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City.  Grace Berry led the Bulldogs with 15 points and seven assists earning All Tournament MVP.  Concordia head coach Drew Olson was named the Coach of the Year.

 

In the men’s championship in Sioux Falls, Spring Arbor of Michigan beat Oregon Tech 82-76.

 

Coaches and players have been selected for the Sertoma Eight Man All Star Football Classic, to be held on June 15th at Lloyd Wilson Field.  The head coaches will be Ryan Haughton of Fullerton and Jeff Shabram of Clearwater-Orchard. Lane Heikkinen and Jake Sharp of Lawrence Nelson will play for the East.  Ryan Denkert of Kenesaw and Dayne Hinrichs of Giltner will suit up for the West.  Kickoff will be at 6:00pm.

 

The Adams Central Board of Education has voted to add a boys baseball team to its spring sports line-up.  Hastings High already has a baseball team.  Kearney begins play this season.  In a recent student survey, 72 students at Adams Central indicated they would be interested in joining the team.  The Patriots hope to begin play in the spring of 2020.

 

In college basketball last night, St. Mary’s stunned number one ranked Gonzaga 60-47 to win the West Coast  Conference Championship.  St. Mary’s ended the nations longest winning streak and Gonzaga’s six year reign as Conference Tournament Champions.
