Local Sports 3-6-2019

James Palmer Junior and Glynn Watson Junior combined for 55 points, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the hot shooting of Michigan State in a 91-76 loss at the Breslin Center last night.  Palmer tied his season high with 30 points while Watson chipped in with 25, but the Spartans kept the Huskers at bay by shooting 53 percent from the floor including 12 of 24 from the three point line. Nebraska is now 15-15 on the season, 5-14 in the Big Ten Conference.  They’ll wrap up the regular season on Sunday by hosting Iowa.  Tip-off will be at 1:00pm.


The Nebraska women’s basketball team will play either Purdue or Illinois tomorrow in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament in Indianapolis.  The Boilermakers and the Fighting Illini will meet in a play-in game at 3:00pm this afternoon. The Huskers are 14-15 on the season.  They finished 9-9 in the conference.  Tomorrow’s game gets underway at 7:30pm.  We’ll have it on ESPN 1550 KICS beginning with the pre-game show at 7:04pm.


Nebraska running back Maurice Washington will be a limited participant in spring football practice while he battles legal problems in California.  Washington is facing legal charges for allegedly sending a sexually explicit video to a girl in that appeared in the video.  Head coach Scott Frost says any final decision about Washington’s status with the team will be made by himself and university administrators.  Washington was Nebraska’s number two rusher behind Devine Ozigbo last season.


The Nebraska-Kearney women’s basketball team will battle Missouri Western State in the MIAA Tournament tonight in Kansas City.  The Lopers are 15-13 on the season.  They finished 8-11 in the conference.  The Griffons are 13-15, 8-11 in the league.  UNK beat Missouri Western State 62-53 earlier this season in Kearney.  Tip-off will be at 6:00pm.  The winner will play top seeded Fort Hays State on Thursday.


The NAIA National Tournaments will get underway today.  At the men’s tournament in Sioux Falls, Southeastern of Florida will play Jamestown of North Dakota at 10:15am this morning while Dakota Wesleyan will take on Warner University of Florida at 5:45pm this afternoon.  At the women’s tournament in Sioux City, Concordia will play Wilburforce of Ohio at noon today.  Morningside will battle the University of Antelope Valley at 8:45pm tonight.  The Hastings College women will be in action tomorrow.  The Broncos will play Aquinas of Michigan at 5:15pm.  We’ll have the game on 1230AM KHAS beginning with the pre-game show at 5:00pm.


The boys state high school basketball tournament gets underway tomorrow.  Adams Central, Blue Hill, Sutton, Grand Island Central Catholic and Kearney will be participating in the tournament.
