Local Sports 4-15-2019

The Nebraska baseball team is in first place in the Big Ten Conference after sweeping Penn State over the weekend. It marks Nebraska’s first three game road conference series sweep since March of 2016 at Purdue. The Huskers are now 20-10, 10-2 in the conference. They’ll play host to Kansas State tomorrow night. First pitch will be at 6:35pm. We’ll have it on 1230AM KHAS beginning at 6:04pm.

The Nebraska softball team went 2-1 in their series with Purdue over the weekend. The Huskers are now 15-24 on the season, 4-8 in the conference. They’ll play host to Minnesota this weekend.

Fred Hoiberg’s coaching staff has been announced. His staff will feature a pair of new hires in assistant coaches Matt Abdelmassih and former Husker head coach Doc Sadler, while Armon Gates will stay on the coaching staff after joining the Husker program prior to last season. Hoiberg has also hired longtime basketball coach Bobby Lutz as a special assistant to the head coach.

Jervay Green of Scottsbluff has reaffirmed his commitment to the Huskers. Green took a second official visit to Nebraska over the weekend, attending the Red-White Spring game and meeting with Fred Hoiberg and his staff. The 6-foot-3, 210 pound Denver native was the number eight juco scorer in the nation this season, averaging 23.6 points per game. He hit 54.7 percent from the field and 39 percent from three point range for Western Nebraska Community College.

Dakota Wesleyan swept a pair of games from the Hastings College baseball team yesterday at Duncan Field. The Tigers limited the Broncos to just three hits in the opener in an 8-0 win. Devin Wagner was the losing pitcher. In the second game, Dakota Wesleyan scored seven runs in the first inning and went on to beat the Broncos 9-0. Billy McGuire went just 1/3 of an inning and gave up seven runs, six hits with four walks and one strikeout. Hastings is now 7-23 on the season, 2-15 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. The same two teams will play another doubleheader at 2:00pm this afternoon. We’ll have the games on 1230AM KHAS beginning with the pre-game show at 1:45pm.

The Hastings College softball team went 0-4 over the weekend. The Broncos lost to Dakota Wesleyan 6-3 and 12-2 on Saturday in Aberdeen, South Dakota then dropped a pair of games to Jamestown yesterday in Sioux City 5-3 and 11-3. The Broncos are now 10-20 on the season, 2-10 in the conference. They’ll play host to the College of St. Mary’s on Thursday.

The Nebraska-Kearney softball team went 1-3 over the weekend. The Lopers split a pair of games with Washburn on Friday, then lost two games to Emporia State on Saturday. UNK is now 15-21, 9-11 in the MIAA. They’ll play host to Chadron State on Wednesday.

The NAIA has announced that men’s and women’s bowling will become the 27th and 28th sports to earn national championship status beginning in the 2019-2020. Both men’s and women’s bowling follow competitive cheerleading, dance, and men’s volleyball as the newest sports over the last three years to go from invitational to championship status.

The Nebraska bowling team lost to Vanderbilt on Saturday in the consolation bracket of the NCAA Championships in Wickliffe, Ohio. Stephen F. Austin beat Vanderbilt to win the national title.

The Hastings High baseball team went 1-1 at the Ralston Triangular on Saturday. The Tigers beat Ralston 10-4 but lost to Omaha Concordia/Brownell Talbot/Omaha Christian 7-6. Hastings is now 9-3 on the season and will play at Twin River today.

The Kansas City Royals completed a three game sweep of Cleveland with a 9-8 win yesterday. Kansas City will play at Chicago tonight beginning at 7:10pm. Pre-game show begins at 6:30pm on “The Breeze,” KLIQ 94.5FM.
