Local Sports 4-5-2019

Texas won the men’s NIT championship last night with an 81-66 victory over Lipscomb. Tonight, it’s the NCAA women’s Final Four as Oregon will take on Baylor at 6:00pm followed by UConn against Notre Dame. Tomorrow night, it’s the NCAA men’s Final Four as Auburn will play Virginia at 5:00pm followed by Texas Tech and Michigan State.

Nebraska basketball recruit Mika Adams Woods of Syracuse, New York has decommitted from the Huskers and will reopen his recruiting process. Omaha Creighton Prep star Akol Arop met with new Husker head coach Fred Hoiberg yesterday and remains committed to Nebraska. A third recruit, junior college guard Jervay Green of Scottsbluff is expected to announce his decision today.

The Nebraska baseball team will play Purdue this weekend at Hawks Field in Lincoln. The Huskers are 14-9 on the season, 4-2 in the Big Ten Conference. The Boilermakers are 10-17,
4-1 in the conference. Tonight’s game gets underway at 6:35pm. We’ll have it on 1230AM KHAS.

The Nebraska softball team will host Northwestern this weekend at Bowlin Stadium. The Huskers are 13-19 on the season, 2-4 in the Big Ten. The Wildcats are 26-7, 6-0 in the conference. Northwestern is hitting .344 in conference games and have outscored their opponents 36-6.

The Hastings College baseball and softball teams will be in action this weekend. The baseball team will play at Morningside tomorrow and at Midland on Sunday. The softball team will host Dordt this afternoon and Northwestern on Saturday.

Hastings College men’s basketball coach Bill Gavers is hot on the recruiting trial. The Broncos have signed Karson Gansebom of Bennington and Bragen Meyer of Milford. Gansebom helped Bennington win 78 games in his four years. He averaged 15.7 points per game his senior season. Meyer helped Milford qualify for the state tournament this past season. He averaged 12.5 points and 6.7 assists per game. Ashton Valentine of Hastings St. Cecilia is expected to sign with the Broncos today.

The Hastings High baseball team beat Wahoo/Bishop Neumann/Lincoln Christian 10-0 in 4 ½ innings last night at Duncan Field. Sam Wibbels allowed only two hits and struck out 12. He also had a three run double in the second inning. Hastings is now 5-1 on the season and will host Omaha South today at 4:00pm. We’ll have it on 1230AM KHAS beginning with the pre-game show at 3:45pm.

In other action, Kearney beat Grand Island 4-3. Mason Casper won it with a walk off single. Kearney is now 5-1. Grand Island falls to 4-3.

In boys high school soccer, Grand Island beat Lincoln East 3-2 in a shootout, Kearney shut out Fremont 5-0 and Northwest beat Grand Island Central Catholic 5-0, In girls high school soccer, Kearney beat Fremont 7-0.

The Nebraska Danger will play Tucson tomorrow night at the Heartland Events Center in Grand Island. The Danger are 2-3 on the season after last weeks 50-35 victory over Bismark. THe Sugar Skulls are 3-1. Kickoff will be at 7:00pm.

ROYALS> The Kansas City Royals dropped their fourth straight game yesterday after a 2-0 start. The Royals lost to Detroit 5-4. The same two teams will play again tomorrow at 12:15pm. We’ll have the game on “The Breeze,” KLIQ 94.5FM beginning with the pre-game show at 11:30am.
