Local Sports 5-13-2019

The Nebraska baseball team beat Arizona State 8-5 yesterday at Hawks Field.  Reece Eddins was the winning pitcher.  He threw six innings and gave up three runs and six hits.  Eddins struck out three and walked five.  Alex Henwood had three hits and two rbi’s for the Huskers.  Nebraska took two of three games from the Sun Devils over the weekend.  They are now 26-19 on the season and will conclude the regular season with a three game series against Michigan beginning Thursday night.

 

Top seeded Michigan won the Big Ten Softball Championship with a 3-2 win over Minnesota in the title game.  It’s the 10th Big Ten Tournament Championship for the Wolverines, but their first since 2015.  With the victory, Michigan earns the automatic berth into this year’s NCAA Tournament.

 

Jamestown and Concordia will play in the NAIA Baseball Tournament today.  The Jimmies will play 25th ranked Arizona Christian while the Bulldogs will battle Clark University. Meanwhile, in the NAIA Softball Tournament today, Morningside will play Olivet Nazarene while Midland will take on Baker University.  All four games begin at 11:00am.

 

Hastings High will play top seeded Waverly today in the Class B State Baseball Tournament in Omaha.  The Tigers beat Seward 12-2 in the opening round on Saturday.  Sam Wibbels threw six innings and struck out ten.  He also had three hits.  Waverly got by Mount Michael 4-3.  The Vikings beat the Tigers 5-3 earlier this year.  Game time will be at 4:00pm at Werner Park.  We’ll have the action on 1230AM KHAS beginning with the pre-game show at 3:45pm.  At 7:00pm tonight, Norris will play Bennington.  In the elimination games, Mount Michael will play Seward at 10:00am followed by Elkhorn against Concordia/Omaha Brownell Talbot/Omaha Christian Academy at 1:00pm.

 

The schedule has been changed for the Class A State Tournament in Lincoln.  Millard West will play Omaha Creighton Prep at 1:00pm this afternoon at Haymarket Park to complete the opening round.  Elkhorn South, Millard South and Archbishop Bergen were winners on Saturday before rain halted play.  Kearney and Grand Island will play at 4:00pm tomorrow afternoon in the elimination game.

 

District golf tournaments will get underway today.  Hastings High and Adams Central will play in the B-3 district  at Jackrabbit Run Golf Course in Grand Island.  St. Cecilia and most of the other area teams will play in the C-4 district at Indianhead Golf Course in Grand Island. Kearney will host to A-2 district at Meadowlark Hills.

 

The boys state high school soccer championships will be decided tonight at Morrison Stadium in Omaha. In Class B, Columbus will play Omaha Skutt at 5:00pm this afternoon followed by the Class A final between Creighton Prep and Omaha South at 7:30pm.  The girls championships will be held tomorrow.  In Class B, Elkhorn South will play Omaha Skutt at 5:00pm followed by the Class A state championship with Millard West taking on Omaha Marian at 7:30pm.

 

ROYALS> Philadelphia beat the Kansas City Royals 6-1 yesterday.  The Royals are now 14-27 on the season.  They’ll play host to Texas on Tuesday beginning at 7:15pm.  Pre-game show begins at 6:30pm on “The Breeze,’ KLIQ 94.5FM.

 

NBA> In the NBA playoffs yesterday, Portland beat Denver 100-96.  The Trailblazers win the best of seven series 4-3. Toronto got by Philadelphia 92-90 and win that series 4-3.

 

NHL> In the NHL playoffs, Boston beat Carolina 6-2.  The Bruins lead the series 2-0.

 

NASCAR> Brad Keselowski won the Digital Ally 400 on Saturday at the Kansas Speedway.  Alex Bowman was second followed by Erik Jones, Chase Elliot and Clint Bowyer.
