Local Sports 5-14-2019

The Hastings High baseball team came back from a 2-0 deficit to beat Waverly 5-2 last night in the Class B state tournament in Omaha.  Jacob Schroeder was the winning pitcher.  He threw six innings and gave up two runs and six hits.  Schroeder struck out five and walked three.  Braden Kalvelage and Connor Creech had two hits apiece. Hastings is now 20-6 on the season and will play Bennington in the winner’s bracket final tonight.  Bennington beat Norris 11-1 last night.  Game time will be at 7:00pm at Werner Park. We’ll have the action on 1230AM KHAS beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45pm.  In the other games, Mount Michael eliminated Seward with an 8-3 win.  Elkhorn ousted Concordia/Omaha Brownell Talbot/Omaha Christian Academy with an 11-0 victory.


In the Class A State Tournament yesterday, Millard West beat Omaha Creighton Prep 1-0 in nine innings.  Today, Kearney will play Grand Island in an elimination game at 4:00pm at Sherman Field in Lincoln.  We’ll have the game on ESPN Radio beginning with the pre-game show at 3:45pm.


Omaha South and Omaha Skutt won boys state soccer championships last night.  Omaha South beat Omaha Creighton Prep 2-1 to win the Class A State Championship.  Skutt got by Columbus 1-0 to win the Class B crown.  The girl’s championships will be decided tonight.  In Class A, it’s Millard West against Omaha Marian.  In Class B, it’s Omaha Skutt against Elkhorn South.


Kearney finished second at the A-2 District Golf Tournament yesterday at Meadowlark Hills in Kearney.  The Bearcats finished with a team score of 320.  Lincoln Southwest won the championship with a 309.  Joshua Bartels of Southwest was the medalist with a 73.


Grand Island was fourth at the A-1 District Golf Tournament at the Fremont Golf Club.  The Islanders had a team score of 345.  The top three teams were Norfolk, Omaha Westside and Elkhorn South.  Luke Kluver of Norfolk was the medalist with a 61. Marcus Holling of Grand Island qualifies for state after finishing sixth with a 78.


Franklin won the D-1 District Golf Tournament at the Indianhead Golf Course in Grand Island.  The Flyers finished with a team score of 361.  Heartland was second with a 378.  Exeter Milligan came in third with a 407.  Blue Hill was fourth with a 432.  Ryan Weiss of Franklin shot the low round with a 69.


The Nebraska men’s basketball team has put the finishing touches on its 2019 recruiting class by receiving a commitment from 6-foot-8 power forward Kevin Cross of Little Rock Arkansas. Cross had other offers from TCU and Oklahoma State.


Nebraska running back Maurice Washington will now be represented by a California attorney as he faces allegations that he forwarded a video of a minor performing a sex act.  His next court appearance is scheduled for June 12th.


In the NAIA baseball tournament yesterday, Arizona Christian beat Jamestown 5-4.  Concordia split two games.  The Bulldogs beat Clark University 3-1 and lost to Oklahoma Wesleyan 14-6.  In the NAIA softball tournament, Olivet Nazarene got by Morningside 4-2 and Baker University beat Midland 6-1.


ROYALS> The Kansas City Royals open a series with the Texas Rangers tonight at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City.  First pitch will be at 7:15pm.  Pre-game show begins at 6:30pm on “The Breeze,” KLIQ 94.5FM.


NBA> There were no games in the NBA playoffs last night.  Tonight, Portland plays at Golden State in the first game of the Western Conference Finals.


NHL> In the NHL playoffs last night, St. Louis beat San Jose 4-2.  That best of seven series is tied at one game apiece. Tonight, it’s Boston at Carolina.  The Bruins lead the series 2-0.
