Local Sports 5-3-2019

Former St. Cecilia football coach and teacher Tyler Hedlund has been arrested for felony intentional child abuse.  Hedlund turned himself into local authorities at about 2:30pm yesterday.  He’s accused of having sex with a 16 year old student.


The Nebraska baseball team will play at Northwestern this weekend.  The Huskers are 23-16 on the season, 12-6 in the Big Ten Conference.  The Wildcats are 19-22, 6-9 in the league.  Nebraska enters the weekend currently in third place in the conference behind Michigan and Indiana.  The two teams will play at 2:00pm on Saturday, 1:00pm on Sunday and 3:30pm on Monday.  We’ll have the action on 1230AM KHAS.


The Nebraska softball team concludes the 2019 regular season this weekend when it travels to Madison, Wisconsin to face the Badgers.  The Huskers are tied for seventh place in the conference with an 8-12 record.  They are 20-28 on the season.  The Badgers are 36-10, 13-7 in the league.  The three game series gets underway at 5:00pm this afternoon.


Brady Heiman is leaving the Nebraska basketball program and has entered the NCAA transfer portal.  The 6-foot-11 inch freshman appeared in 30 games for the Huskers this season and averaged 1.8 points per game.  Heiman shot 59.5 percent from the floor and 29.4 percent from the free throw line and attempted one 3-point shot.  Heiman is the third scholarship player to transfer from Nebraska since the firing of Tim Miles, joining Thomas Allen and Nana Akenten.


At the GPAC Post Season Baseball Tournament’s yesterday, in the Concordia bracket, Dakota Wesleyan beat Mount Marty 3-1 and Concordia pounded Doane 12-1.  Today, Dakota Wesleyan will play Concordia at 2:00pm followed by Mount Marty and Doane at 5:00pm.  In the Jamestown bracket, Northwestern shut out Midland 7-0 and Jamestown blanked Morningside 8-0.  Northwestern will play Jamestown at noon today followed by Midland and Morningside at 3:00pm.


Jamestown and Morningside went 2-0 at the GPAC Post Season Softball Tournaments.  Northwestern and the College of St. Mary’s have been eliminated.  In the Midland bracket, Dordt will play Midland in the elimination game at noon today with the winner playing Jamestown for the championship at 2:00pm.  In the Morningside bracket, Mount Marty will play Concordia in the elimination game at noon with the winner playing Morningside for the championship at 2:00pm.


Hastings High beat Northwest 3-0 to win the girls B-7 subdistrict soccer championship last night at Hastings College.  The Tigers are now 10-4 and will play host to Lexington tomorrow in the district finals.  At the boys B-7 subdistrict tournament in Holdrege last night, Northwest beat Holdrege 2-0.  The Kearney boys won their fourth straight district championship with a 4-2 win over Millard West to win the A-2 crown.  Gretna beat the Kearney girls 3-1 to win the A-5 District championship.


High School baseball district’s get underway this weekend.  Hastings High will play either Omaha Gross or Fort Calhoun in the B-5 district tournament tomorrow at 3:00pm at Omaha Skutt.  Kearney will play Millard North tomorrow at Millard West beginning at 1:30pm in the A-1 District Tournament.  Grand Island will battle Bellevue West in the A-5 district Tournament at Omaha Creighton Prep. Gametime will be at 12:30pm.


David City won the Southern Nebraska Conference Golf Championship yesterday.  The Scouts finished with a team score of 336.  Sutton was second with a 345.  Fillmore Central came in third with a 351.  Jordan Kracl of David City was the medalist with a 75.


The Tri City Storm face elimination in the Clark Cup Playoffs tonight.  The Storm will play at Sioux Falls in the third game of the Western Conference finals.  The Stampede won the first two games of the series in Kearney 3-0 and 4-1.  The puck will drop at 7:05pm.


The Nebraska Danger will play at Arizona tomorrow night. The Danger is 5-4 on the season.   Kickoff will be at 7:05pm.


ROYALS> Tampa Bay beat the Kansas City Royals 3-1 yesterday.  Kansas City will play at Detroit tonight beginning at 6:10pm.  Pre-game show begins at 5:30pm on “The Breeze,’ KLIQ 94.5FM.


NBA> In the NBA playoffs last night, Philadelphia beat Toronto 116-95.  The 76ers lead the best of seven series 2-1.


NHL> In the NHL playoffs, Boston beat Columbus 4-1.  That series is tied at two games apiece.  Colorado shut out San Jose 3-0.  That series is also tied at two games apiece.
