Local Sports 5-9-2019

GPAC> Morningside is the 2018-2019 GPAC All-Sports Champion. The GPAC All-Sports Trophy is a traveling trophy awarded annually to the school that finishes first in the final All-Sports standings. Points are awarded based on the finish in each of the GPAC’s 21 championship sports. Concordia was second followed in order by Northwestern, Midland, Hastings, Doane, Dordt, Jamestown, Briar Cliff, Dakota Wesleyan, Mount Marty, and the College of Saint Mary

All conference teams are out in the GPAC.
Hastings College Softball’s Tatiem Bender, Alyssa Carter, and Julia Reimer made the 2nd team.
Earning Baseball honorable mentions were Camden Brichacek, Cole Staab, Grant Svec, and Dylan Fitzgerald. Brichacek also received a conference Gold Glove

STATE SOCCER> Yesterday was the first day of the High School State Soccer tournament played at Creighton University. Six boys games were completed. Papillion-La Vista, Creighton Prep, Omaha South, and Gretna were winners in Class A. Omaha Skutt and Crete won their Class B games. The rest of Class B boys and the Class A girls will play today. Class B girls will play first round games on Friday. Hastings High will face Omaha Mercy on Friday at 3:00 p.m. Boys Championship games will be on Monday, girls on Tuesday.

DISTRICT TRACK> Class B and Class C District Meets will be held today. Hastings High, Adams Central, Grand Island Northwest, and Minden compete in the B-5 meet in Lexington today. Hastings St. Cecilia will be in the C-7 today Sandy Creek which also includes Blue Hill, Doniphan-Trumbull, Superior, Sutton, and Wood River.

District C-6 at Ord also has Grand Island Central Catholic, Ravenna, and St. Paul.

District C-8 at Southern Valley High School has Amherst, Elm Creek, Gibbon, and Kearney Catholic.

The Class A and Class D Districts were supposed to be held yesterday but moved to Friday because of the weather.

NBA> An injury arguable the biggest player in the NBA Playoffs, Kevin Durrant, couldn’t stop
The Golden State Warriors from winning game 5 over the Houston Rockets last night 104-99. Durant went out in the 3rd quarter with a right calf strain. He’ll get an MRI today so see if he’ll miss Friday’s game 6 in Houston. Steph Curry scored 12 of his 25 points in the 4th quarter to secure the win.
The Milwaukee Bucks eliminated the Boston Celtics and advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals with a 116-91 win last night. The Bucks will await the winner of the Philadelphia 76ers-Toronto Raptors series with Game 6 taking place on tonight. Toronto leads that series 3-2.

Also tonight, the Denver Nuggets will try to close out the series against the Portland Trailblazers. Denver leads 3-2 in that series.

NHL> San Jose Shark eliminated the Colorado Avalanche from the NHL Playoffs last night with a 3-2 win.
The Carolina Hurricanes are at the Boston Bruins tonight in Boston to start the Eastern Conference Finals.

MLB> The Kansas City Royals had quiet bats yesterday against Houston, losing 9-0. KC has of off day today before facing Philadelphia on Friday.
