Local Sports 6-12-2019

The Nebraska football team has picked up a 6-foot-6, 250 pound tight end from Rutgers.  Travis Vokolek is transferring to Nebraska after catching 16 passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns as a sophomore in 2018.  Vokolek also visited Iowa and Kansas State.

 

Practice is underway for the 42nd annual Sertoma 8-Man All Star Football Classic to be played this Saturday at Lloyd Wilson Field.  Proceeds from the game will assist the Nebraska Sertoma Speech and Hearing Association.  Jeff Shabram of Clearwater-Orchard will coach the West Team.   The East will be coached by Ryan Haughton of Fullerton.  Ryan Denkert of Kenesaw and Dayne Hinrichs of Giltner will play for the West.  Lane Heikkinen and Jake Sharp of Lawrence Nelson will suit up for the East.  Kickoff will be at 6:00pm.  We’ll have the game on Power 99 KKPR 98.9FM beginning with the pre-game show at 5:30pm.

 

The Western Nebraska Pioneers scored seven runs in the first inning and went on to beat the Hastings Sodbusters 20-0 last night in Gering.  Hastings starting pitcher Trevan Lowtharp lasted just three innings and gave up 10 runs and 14 hits.  Lowtharp struck out two and walked eight.  The Pioneers outhit the Sodbusters 14-5.  Hastings has now lost three games in a row to fall to 5-11 on the season.  The same two teams will play tonight beginning at 6:35pm.

 

Hastings Five Points Bank scored one run in the fifth inning and five more in the sixth to beat Columbus Cornerstone Insurance Group 6-1 last night at Duncan Field.  Josh Brooks had three hits and two rbi’s for Hastings.  He also threw three innings of relief and gave up one run and five hits.  Laif Hultine and Leif Spady added two hits apiece as Hastings outhit Columbus 11-6.  Hastings is now 12-4 on the season and will play Grand Island Home Federal tomorrow to complete a suspended game from May 28th with Grand Island leading 14-7 after three innings.  We’ll have the action beginning at 6:15pm on 1230AM KHAS.

 

Trevor Sullivan scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Hastings Johnson Imperial Homes to a 2-1 win over Columbus Federal Credit Union last night.  Hastings starting pitcher Treyton Newman went 6 2/3 innings and gave up just one run and six hits.  He struck out eight and walked one.  Luke Kirkegaard threw 1/3 of an inning of relief and picked up the win.  Tyson Lebar had two hits.  JIH is now 16-3 on the season and will host York tonight beginning at 5:30pm.

 

In other action, Kearney Runza beat North Platte 9-1.  Kearney Post 52 lost to North Platte 9-1.

 

ROYALS> The Kansas City Royals beat Detroit 3-2 last night.  The same two teams play at 7:15pm tonight.  Pre-game Show begins at 6:30pm on “The Breeze,” KLIQ 94.5FM.

 

NHL> The Boston Bruins will host St. Louis tonight in the seventh and deciding game in the Stanley Cup Final.  The Bruins staved off elimination on Sunday with a 5-1 win in St. Louis.  Tonight’s game gets underway at 7:00pm on NBC.

 

NBA> The NBA Finals resume tomorrow night as Toronto plays at Golden State.  The Raptors lead the series 3-2.  Tip-off will be at 8:00pm.
