Vanderbilt has won the national championship at the College World Series in Omaha.  The Commodores beat Michigan 8-2 last night in Game 3 of the final series.  Vanderbilt is the fourth school in five years to clinch the national title after dropping Game 1 of the championship series.  Mason Hickman earned the win, allowing just one first inning run in six innings of work.  He struck out 10 and allowed just four hits.  This is Vanderbilt’s second College World Series title in four appearances in Omaha.  The Commodores also won the title in 2014.  Michigan was the first team from the Big Ten Conference to play in the finals since 1966.


The Nebraska men’s basketball team is getting ready for their trip to Europe this summer.  The Huskers will play four games in Italy from August 3-13. Nebraska is allowed ten practices before the trip, with workouts starting July 15th.  Nebraska must replace all five starters from last year’s team with a roster that includes 11 new scholarship players for new head coach Fred Hoiberg.


The Hastings Sodbusters were rained out last night in Gering.  Hastings will play the Western Nebraska Pioneers in a doubleheader today beginning at 5:35pm.


Hastings Five Points Bank hammered out 16 hits last night to beat Kearney Runza 12-3 at Memorial Field.  JT Cafferty led the assault with four hits.  Ashton Valentine, Tyson Bonham and Mason Brumbaugh had three hits apiece.  CJ Remmenga threw 2 1/3 innings of relief to pick up the win.  Laif Hultine and Michael Shaw also spent time on the mound, as Hastings limited Kearney to just two hits in the game.  Kearney is now 18-6 on the season.  Hastings is 18-7.  Hastings will play Norfolk in a doubleheader tonight at Duncan Field beginning at 5:00pm.  We’ll have the action on 1230AM KHAS beginning with the pre-game show at 4:45pm.


Carson Schnacker was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning to drive in the winning run as Kearney Post 52 beat Hastings Johnson Imperial Homes 7-6 last night.  Tyson Labar had three hits and two rbi’s for Hastings.  Nick Carlson had three hits and three rbi’s for Kearney.  Seth Altwine had three hits and one rbi. Kearney is now 13-11.  Hastings falls to 23-6.


In other action, Grand Island Home Federal beat North Platte First National Bank 8-0 last night in North Platte.  Trevor Johnson was the winning pitcher, allowing only six hits in five innings.  Javier Cruz had three hits for Grand Island, who improves to 12-14 on the season.


ROYALS> The Kansas City Royals lost to Cleveland 5-3 yesterday.  Kansas City will play at Toronto on Friday beginning at 6:07pm.  Pre-game will be at 5:30pm on “The Breeze,” KLIQ 94.5FM.
