Hastings High senior Sam Wibbels was picked up by the Washington Nationals in the 36th round of the Major League Baseball Draft yesterday.  Wibbels was 8-1 for the Tigers this year.  He recorded 120 strikeouts and held opponents to a .114 batting average.  Wibbels is currently committed to play baseball next season at Kentucky.


Nebraska senior right handed pitcher Matt Waldron was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 18th round of the Major League Baseball Draft.  He was the 550th player taken overall.  Waldron led the 2019 Husker pitching staff in ERA, strikeouts and innings pitched, while tying for second in wins.


Creighton had six players drafted, the most since 1993. Three players were picked in the top 10 rounds for the first time in 28 years and right fielder Will Robertson became the highest drafted Bluejay since 1999 when he was picked up by the Toronto Blue Jays  with the 117th selection overall.


Former Nebraska head football coach Mike Riley has a new job.  Riley was introduced yesterday as the offensive coordinator of the XFL’s Seattle franchise., coached by Jim Zorn.  Riley lands the job after serving as the head coach of the now defunct San Antonio Commanders of the AAF, where he was 5-3.


A late rally by Hastings Five Points Bank came up short last night in an 8-7 loss to Kearney Runza at Duncan Field.  Hastings trailed 8-2 after 5 ½ innings, but scored four runs in the sixth and one in the seventh and had the tying run at third base and the winning run at first base when the game ended.  Hastings College pitcher Keegan Thurston picked up the win for Kearney.  Jake Shaw took the loss.  Corbin Foster had three hits for Kearney.  Tyson Bonham had two hits for Hastings.  Kearney is now 7-1 on the season.  Hastings falls to 9-2.


Hastings Johnson Imperial Homes scored five runs in the fifth inning to beat Kearney Post 52 5-3 last night.  Treyton Newman was the winning pitcher.  Cal Higgins took the loss.  Cambren Montague had two hits for Hastings.  Collin Fruhling had three hits and two rbi’s for Kearney.  Hastings is now 11-3 on the season, Kearney falls to 7-4.


In other action, Hastings Runza took two from Lexington 10-5 and 8-6.  Grand Island Home Federal split a pair of games from Waverly.  Home Federal won the first game 8-0 but dropped the nightcap 10-2.


The Hastings Sodbusters beat Casper 9-1 last night.  Hastings is now 4-6 on the season.  The same two teams will play again tonight in Casper.  First pitch will be at 6:35pm.


The Nebraska Danger hope to keep their playoff hopes alive tonight when they play at San Diego.  The Danger are 5-7 on the season.  The San Diego Strike Force are 1-11.  Kickoff will be at 9:05pm.


ROYALS> The Boston Red Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 8-0 last night.  The same two teams play at 12:15pm this afternoon on ESPN 1550 KICS.


NBA> The Toronto Raptors beat the Golden State Warriors 123-109 last night in the third game of the NBA FInals.  Toronto now leads the best of seven series 2-1.  Game four is coming up on Friday in California.


NHL> Its game five of the Stanly Cup Finals tonight as the St. Louis Blues play at Boston.  That series is tied at two games apiece.
