Local Sports 6-7-2019

For the second straight season, the Nebraska men’s basketball team will be on the road for the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.  The Huskers will travel to Atlanta, Georgia on Wednesday December 4th for a matchup with Georgia Tech.  The two teams have not played since December 28th of 1983 when the Yellow Jackets beat the Huskers 66-49.  Georgia Tech was 14-18 last year and finished 10th in the ACC.


Hastings High senior Mike Boeve has announced plans to attend Nebraska-Omaha next year and play baseball for the Mavericks.  Boeve hit .373 for the Tigers this year with three home runs and 37 RBI’s.  Omaha qualified for the NCAA Tournament before being ousted last week in Los Angeles.


Royce Austen of Kearney High School has been named the Nebraska Boys Soccer Gatorade Player of the Year.  Austen led the Bearcats with 63 goals and 35 assists this season.


Devonte Sapp-Lynch ran for two touchdowns and added a 50-yard kickoff return for another score as the Nebraska Danger beat the San Diego Strike Force 54-26 last night.  Danger quarterback Tommy Armstrong completed 10 of 17 passes for 102 yards and a touchdown.  He also rushed for 21 yards and two touchdowns.  The Danger improved to 6-7 on the season heading into the regular season finale against the defending champion Iowa Barnstormers on June 15th.  A win over Iowa would clinch a playoff spot for the Danger.


The Hastings Sodbusters lost to Casper 11-10 last night.  Casey Burnham had two hits including a home run with three rbi’s.  JD Barrett had two hits and two rbi’s.  Grant Schmidt had two hits and one rbi.  Austin Quick was the losing pitcher.  The Sodbusters are now 4-7 on the season and will host Spearfish tonight at Duncan Field.  First pitch will be at 6:35pm.


In Legion baseball last night, Kearney Post 52 beat Sioux Falls West 5-2 at Memorial Field.  Cale Conrad had two hits and two rbi’s.  Carson Schnacker allowed only two hits and struck out seven.  Kearney is now 8-4.


The Hastings Legion teams will be busy this weekend.  Hastings Five Points Bank will play in the Omaha Gross Tournament.  Hastings Johnson Imperial Homes is at the Omaha South Tournament and Hastings Runza will host their own tournament at the Smith Complex.


ROYALS> The Boston Red Sox beat Kansas City 7-5 last night.  It’s the sixth straight loss for the Royals.  Kansas City will host Chicago tonight beginning at 7:15pm.  Pre-game show begins at 6:30pm on “The Breeze,” KLIQ 94.5FM.


NHL> In the Stanley Cup playoffs last night, St. Louis beat Boston 2-1.  The Blues now lead the best of seven series 3-2.  Game six is coming up on Sunday in St. Louis.


NBA> The NBA Finals resume tonight as Toronto plays at Golden State.  The Raptors lead the series 2-1.  Tip-off will be at 8:00pm.  Pre-game show at 7:00pm on ESPN Radio.


NFL> The Philadelphia Eagles have signed franchise quarterback Carson Wentz to a four year extension through the 2024 season.  The extension is for 128 million dollars and includes 107.9 million guaranteed, including 66 million dolllars due at signing.  The extension can escalate to a max of 144 milion dollars.  Wentz’s total deal is now six years for 154 million dollars and can grow to a max of 170 million.
