College football opens up in less than two months and longtime college football expert Phil Steele is out with his preseason top 25 poll and Nebraska makes the list at number 19. The Huskers finished 4-8 last season. Alabama is ranked number one followed by Clemson, Michigan, Georgia and Oklahoma. Rounding out the top ten are Ohio State, LSU, Utah, Notre Dame and Florida. Michigan State is number 13, Penn State is 20th and Iowa is number 23.
Scottsbluff native Nate Lashley completed a wire to wire victory in the Rocket Mortgage Classic on Sunday for his first PGA title. Lashley closed with a 2-under par 70 to finish at 25-under 263 for the tournament. He becomes the fourth Nebraskan to win on the PGA tour. Lashley graduated from Mitchell High School in 2001 and the University of Arizona in 2005. His parents and his girlfriend were killed in a plane crash 15 years ago. With the win, Lashley qualifies for the British Open and next year’s Masters.
Husker senior Haley Thiele captured her second Nebraska Women’s Amateur Championship in the last three years with a 54-hole total of 220 to win by eight strokes at the York Country Club.
The Hastings Sodbusters beat the Fremont Moo 6-2 last night in Fremont. Hunter Kelchner was the winning pitcher. Anthony Cassos had three hits. Hastings is now 14-19 on the season and will host Fremont tonight at Duncan Field. First pitch will be at 6:35pm.
Hastings Five Points Bank went 3-1 in the Grand Island/Kearney Invite over the weekend. Hastings beat Bellevue West 10-0, Papillion LaVista 7-3 and Millard South 2-1, but lost to Millard West 5-0. Hastings is now 22-9 on the season and will play at North Platte tonight.
Hastings Johnson Imperial Homes took two games from Lincoln North Star on Friday, 8-0 and 11-1. Hastings is now 25-6 and will also play in North Platte tonight.
Hastings Runza won a pair of games yesterday. Hastings beat Grand Island 2-1 and Aurora 11-3. Hastings is now 21-11-1 and will host Wood River on Tuesday.
Kearney Runza went 4-0 in the Grand Island/Kearney Invite. Kearney is now 22-6 and will host Lincoln North Star on Tuesday. Grand Island Home Federal went 1-3 over the weekend. Grand Island is now 13-16 and will host Papio South on Tuesday.
The Nebraska Danger lost to Arizona 62-45 on Saturday in the semifinals of the IFL playoffs. The Danger finished the season 8-8. Arizona will play Sioux Falls in the United Bowl.
