Local Sports 7-12-2019

Bubba Starling is being called up to join the active 25 man roster for the Kansas City Royals.  Starling turned down a football scholarship at Nebraska to play professional baseball.  The former first round pick is enjoying his best overall season in the minors with a .310 batting average in 72 games with Omaha.  Starling has 11 doubles, two triples, seven home runs and 38 rbi’s.  He has hit .355 in his last eight games with the Storm Chasers.  Starling could see action tonight as the Kansas City Royals come off of the All Star break with a game against Detroit.  First pitch will be at 7:15pm.  Pre-game show begins at 6:30pm on “The Breeze,” KLIQ 94.5FM.


The Hastings Sodbusters scored three runs in the seventh inning to beat Spearfish 6-5 last night in Spearfish, South Dakota.  Trevan Lowtharp was the winning pitcher.  He threw one inning of relief and gave up two hits with a walk.  JD Barrett and Darek Bornemeier had three hits apiece.  Hastings is now 18-23 on the season and will play three games in Fremont before the Expedition League All Star game next week in Minot, North Dakota.  Tonight’s game with the Moo will begin at 5:05pm.


Hastings Five Points Bank will host the Johnny Hopp Tournament this weekend at Duncan Field.  Hastings will play the Millard Sox at 7:30pm tonight, and then will play two games tomorrow.  Hastings will battle Beatrice at 11:00am followed by a game against Gretna at 6:30pm.  They’ll wrap up the tournament on Sunday with a game against Omaha Gross at 1:30pm.  We’ll have all four games on 1230am KHAS.


In other action, Hastings Johnson Imperial Homes will play two games at Grand Island tomorrow.  Hastings is 33-7 on the season.  Game times will be at 10:00am and at 12:30pm.


Kearney Runza is also involved with the Johnny Hopp Tournament as they are hosting the same teams in the Kearney Invite.  Kearney will play Gretna tonight at 7:30pm at Memorial Field.


Kearney Post 52 is playing in the Omaha Westside Tournament this weekend.  Kearney will play Papillion LaVista at 5:30pm this afternoon.


Area Tournaments get underway today for the Juniors in Classes B and C. At the B-5 Tournament in Central City, Fairfield will play Twin River at 2:00pm, Central City DQ will battle Aurora at 4:30pm and Doniphan/Trumbull will face Central City Cornerstone at 7:00pm.   At the B-6 Tournament in Broken Bow, Minden will play O’Neill at 2:00pm, Broken Bow will play Gothenburg at 4:30pm and Cozad will play Holdrege at 7:00pm.


At the C-5 Tournament in St. Paul, Palmer-Wolbach-Greeley will play Loup City at 2:00pm followed by Utica-Beaver Crossing and Albion at 5:00pm.  Tonight, it’s St. Paul against Ord at 8:00pm.  At the C-6 Tournament in Gibbon, Bruning Davenport Shickley will play Wood River at 6:00pm followed by Ravenna against Shelton-Gibbon at 8:00pm.


NBA> The Oklahoma City Thunder have agreed to trade point guard Russell Westbrook to the Houston Rockets for Chris Paul and a package of draft picks.  The move reunites Westbrook with former Thunder teammate James Harden in Houston.  The Thunder will receive Houston’s first round draft picks in 2024 and 2026, as well as the right to swap first round picks in 2021 and 2025.
