Local Sports 8-14-2019

The Nebraska volleyball team will start the season ranked number two in the AVCA Preseason Coaches Poll.  The Huskers finished 29-7 last year and lost to Stanford in the NCAA Championship match last December.  The two teams will meet this regular season on Wednesday September 18th at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.  This marks the second straight year the Huskers will begin the season at number two.  Stanford is ranked number one, Minnesota is third followed by Texas and Wisconsin.  Rounding out the top ten are Illinois, Kentucky, Penn State, BYU and Florida.  Michigan is number 15 and Purdue is 17th,   Creighton is in at number 18.

 

The Nebraska women’s soccer team will play an exhibition match at Arkansas tomorrow.  The Huskers beat Omaha 4-0 in an exhibition match on Saturday in Lincoln.  The Razorbacks played in the NCAA Tournament in 2018.  Game time will be at 7:00pm.  Nebraska will open the season on August 22nd at Kansas.

 

The fall sports season will get underway for the Hastings College sports teams this week.  The men’s soccer team will play an exhibition match at Drake University on Friday.  They’ll open the season on August 24th by hosting Mid America Nazarene.  The volleyball team will open the season next Wednesday against Corbin University at Lynn Farrell Arena.  The football team will open the season on August 31st at home against Panhandle State of Oklahoma.

 

The Hastings High football team will be looking to take that next step after finishing 4-6 last year and qualifying for the Class B State Playoffs.  The Tigers will have six starters returning on offense and five on defense.  The offense will be led by running back Carson Shoemaker, who rushed for 376 yards and five touchdowns last year.  He also caught 30 passes for 527 yards and two scores.  Izaak Hunsley and Austin Nauert will anchor the defense. Hunsley had 43 tackles last year.  Nauert had 42 with two interceptions.  Hastings will open the season on August 30th at McCook.

 

ROYALS> The St. Louis Cardinals beat the Kansas City Royals 2-0 last night.  The same two teams will play at 7:15pm tonight.  Pre-game show begins at 6:30pm on “The Breeze,” KLIQ 94.5FM.

 

NFL> Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck is dealing with pain in his high ankle and may not be ready for the season opener on September 8th at the Los Angeles Chargers.  Backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who started 15 games in 2017 for the injured Luck, has been working with the first team in Luck’s absence.
