Local Sports 8-2-2019

The Nebraska football team will start the season ranked just outside the nation’s top 25 in the 2019 Preseason Coaches Poll.  The Huskers received enough votes to be ranked number 26.  Defending national champion Clemson is ranked number one.  It’s the first time in the program’s history that the Tigers have been ranked number one in the Preseason Coaches Poll.  Alabama is ranked number two followed by Georgia, Oklahoma and Ohio State.  Rounding out the top ten are LSU, Michigan, Florida, Notre Dame and Texas.  Penn State is 14th, Wisconsin is tied for 17th, Iowa is 19th, Michigan State is number 20 and Northwestern is 25th.


The Husker football team officially opened the fall on Thursday with the annual Nebraska Football Fan Day at Memorial Stadium.  Several thousand fans enjoyed the opportunity to get autographs from the 2019 Husker football team and coaches as well as pose for photos with the Husker Spirit squad.  Nebraska will start their preseason workouts today.  They open the season on August 31st at home against South Alabama.


The Hastings Sodbusters beat the Casper Horseheads 4-1 last night at Duncan Field.  Chris Buting was the wining pitcher.  JD Barrett had three base hits for the Sodbusters.  Hastings is now 25-35 on the season and will play a doubleheader against Casper today, beginning at 4:30pm.


Fremont First State Back will play at Gretna this weekend in a three game series to determine the Class A Seniors State American Legion Baseball Champion.  Fremont wrapped up the American Division on Wednesday with an 8-2 win over Millard South. They’ll be seeking their first state baseball championship since 1946.  Gretna beat Kearney Runza 5-1 on Wednesday to win the National Division.  The winner will play in the Mid South Regional Tournament that begins on Wednesday in Hastings.


Three teams have already qualified for the Mid-South Regional Tournament.  The Three Rivers Bandits won the Oklahoma State Championship and will be coming to Hastings, in addition to the Texarkana Bulldogs, who won the Texas State Championship and the Bryant Black Sox who won the state championship in Arkansas.  Hastings Five Points Bank will join two teams from Missouri, one from Kansas and one from Nebraska in the eight team double elimination tournament.


ROYALS> The Kansas City Royals open a weekend series with the Minnesota Twins tonight.  The Royals are 40-70 on the season.  First pitch will be at 7:10pm.  Pre-game show begins at 6:30pm on “The Breeze,” KLIQ 94.5FM.


NFL> In NFL preseason football last night, the Denver Broncos beat the Atlanta Falcons 14-10.


COLLEGE FOOTBALL> Longtime Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster, who has coached with the Hokies for 32 seasons, will retire after the 2019 season. Foster, the architect of Virginia Tech’s Lunch Pail defense, is the longest continually tenured FBS assistant coach at the same school. He was hired by former Hokies coach Frank Beamer as inside linebackers coach in 1987 and was elevated to co-defensive coordinator in 1995. He assumed control of the defense the next season and has held that role ever since.
