Local Sports 8-21-2019

Season tickets for the Nebraska women’s basketball team will go on sale today. The 18 game home schedule will include a preseason exhibition game, eight non conference games in November and December and a nine game Big Ten schedule.  The Huskers finished 14-16 last year, 9-9 in the conference.  Tickets can be purchased at huskers.com or the Nebraska Athletic Ticket Office.

 

The Nebraska women’s soccer team will open the season tomorrow night in Lawrence, Kansas against the Kansas Jayhawks.  The Huskers beat Omaha and tied Arkansas in two exhibition games this month.  Kansas was 12-6-3 last year and finished sixth in the Big 12 Conference with a 5-4 mark.  Game time will be at 7:00pm.

 

Former Husker Tyron Lue has agreed to a deal to become the top assistant coach for the LA Clippers under head coach Doc Rivers.  Lue was a leading candidate to become the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers earlier this summer, until talks broke down.  Lue was fired as Cleveland’s head coach six games into the 2018-2019 season despite guiding the Cavaliers to three consecutive NBA Final appearances.  He had a record of 128-83 in three plus seasons in Cleveland.

 

The Hastings College volleyball team will start the season tonight with a home match against 19th ranked Corban University of Oregon.  The Broncos were 22-7 a year ago.  This will be the first game for new head coach Alexandra Allard, who took over for Matt Buttermore after he left to take the job at Nebraska-Omaha.  First serve will be at 7:00pm at Lynn Farrell Arena.  The Broncos will host Bellevue University, Grand View and Eastern Oregon this weekend in the Bill Marshall Volleyball Classic.

 

The Nebraska-Kearney volleyball team will start the season number 11 in the 2019 AVCA Division II Top 25 preseason poll.  The Lopers were 33-3 last year.  Defending national champion Tampa is ranked number one.

 

ROYALS> Hanser Alberto hit a tie-breaking three run homer in the eighth inning as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Kansas City Royals 4-1 last night.  The victory snaps an eight game losing streak for the birds.  The same two teams will play at 6:05pm tonight.  Pre-game show begins at 5:30pm on “The Breeze,’ KLIQ 94.5FM.

 

LEGION BASEBALL> The championship game of the American Legion World Series was suspended by rain in the second inning last night with Fargo leading Idaho Falls 2-1.  The game will be completed today.

 

NFL> Linebacker Jaylon Smith has signed a five year, 64 million dollar contract extension with the Dallas Cowboys, that makes him the third highest paid inside linebacker in the NFL.  Smith is guaranteed 35.5 million dollars.  He was second on the team in tackles last year to go along with four sacks, five tackles for loss, 13 quarterback pressures,  two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
