Local Sports 8-22-2019

The Nebraska football team has landed a 6-0, 187 pound running back from Edison High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  Sevion Morrison gave his verbal commitment to the Huskers yesterday.  Morrison has rushed for 36-hundred 60 yards and 45 touchdowns the last two seasons.  He chose Nebraska over Arkansas, Baylor, Colorado State and Georgia Tech.

 

Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez has been named to the 30-player Manning Award Watch List.  Martinez is one of three sophomores up for the award, which is presented to the top quarterback following the conclusion of the 2019 season, including bowl games.  Martinez threw for 26-hundred 17 yards and 17 touchdowns last year.  He also rushed for 629 yards and eight scores en route to All Big Ten and Freshman All-America honors.

 

The Nebraska women’s soccer team will open the season tonight at Kansas.  The Huskers were 9-7-5 last year, 5-3-3 in the conference.  Game time will be at 7:00pm.

 

The Hastings College volleyball team dropped their season opener to 19th ranked Corban University of Oregon last night, 22-25, 19-25, 25-18, 25-22, 13-15. Lucy Skoch had 14 kills and 10 blocks for the Broncos. Emily Krolikowski had 13 kills, Emily Lenners had 12 kills and 11 blocks.  Hastings will host 22nd ranked Bellevue University on Friday in the Bill Marshall Volleyball Classic.  First serve will be at 7:00pm.

 

Hastings College head women’s basketball coach Jina Douglas will be taking on additional duties as Assistant Athletic Director.  Douglas will be replacing former Assistant Athletic Director Chris Clemens, who moved on to be the head women’s soccer coach at Minot State in North Dakota.  Douglas has served as head women’s basketball coach for the past four seasons and has compiled a record of 87-42, including 55-29 in the GPAC.  In her new role, Douglas will serve as the lead administrator for the Hastings College Athletic Department for NAIA and GPAC compliance areas.

 

Senior Abdul Marei has been selected to compete in the inaugural NAIA Senior Football Classic at the end of the 2019 season.  The game will feature 116 seniors from 42 schools on December 14th in Savannah, Georgia .

 

ROYALS> Baltimore beat the Kansas City Royals 8-1 last night.  Kansas City will play in Boston today to complete a suspended game from August 22nd with the score tied 4-4 in the tenth inning.  The game will resume at 12:05pm.

 

NFL> The Arizona Cardinals have signed wide receiver Michael Crabtree, more than two weeks after working him out during training camp.  The move came hours after the Cardinals released wide receiver Kevin White and days after news surfaced about rookie receiver Hakeem Butler’s fractured hand.  Crabtree will be starting his 11th season in the league.

 

FB> The Pac 12 has decided not to move forward with any 9am Pacific Time kickoffs for this season, but is open to revisiting the idea in the future.  Some schools cited fan frustration with late night kickoffs and the exposure for the Pac-12 in new markets as reasons to consider the change.
