The Nebraska men’s basketball season at Pinnacle Bank Arena will be a sellout.  The final available season ticket was sold yesterday, 75 days before Nebraska’s season opener against UC Riverside.  Fred Hoiberg will take over a team that finished 19-17 last year, 6-14 in the conference.

 

The Nebraska volleyball team begins another season with the annual Red-White Scrimmage tomorrow night at the Devaney Center.  Nebraska is coming off its fourth straight NCAA Semifinal appearance and returns 10 players from its 2018 NCAA runner-up squad.  For the first time in school history, the Huskers will have no seniors on their roster.  The scrimmage will get underway at 6:00pm.  We’ll have it on 1230AM KHAS beginning with the pre-game show at 5:30pm.

 

The Nebraska women’s soccer team opened the regular season with a 4-0 loss to Kansas last night in Lawrence.  The Jayhawks’ Katie McClure recorded a hat trick to lead the Kansas offense.  Nebraska will host Clemson next Friday night beginning at 7:05pm.

 

The Hastings College football team had their practice interrupted by lightning and severe thunderstorms yesterday, but the Broncos continue to prepare for next week’s season opener against Panhandle State of Oklahoma.  Head coach Tony Harper says his team has made a lot of progress in the last week, but there’s still a long way to go.  The Broncos will scrimmage for the third time tomorrow.

 

The Hastings College volleyball team will host 22nd ranked Bellevue University tonight in the Bill Marshall Volleyball Classic at Lynn Farrell Arena.  The Broncos opened the season on Wednesday with a loss to 19th ranked Corban University of Oregon.  First serve will be at 7:00pm.  Hastings will host Grandview and Eastern Oregon on Saturday.

 

High school volleyball teams will play in the Bill Marshall Volleyball Classic tomorrow in Grand Island.  Adams Central will play at Grand Island Senior High, Hastings High will play at Grand Island Central Catholic and St. Cecilia will play their games at Northwest.

 

The Adams Central softball team started the season by splitting a pair of games in North Platte yesterday.  The Patriots beat Gering 7-4, but lost to North Platte 10-0.  Adams Central will play in the Lexington Invite on Saturday.

 

Elsewhere in high school softball yesterday, Grand Island and Lincoln East split a pair of games, Blue Hill shut out Fillmore Central/Exeter Milligan 10-0, Grand Island Central Catholic pounded Columbus Lakeview 14-2 and Kearney took two from Lincoln Pius 5-1 and 7-3.

 

ROYALS> The Boston Red Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 5-4 in ten innings yesterday in the resumption of a game that was suspended by rain on August 7th.  Brok Holt drove home the winning run after just 12 minutes of play.  Kansas City will play at Cleveland tonight beginning at 6:10pm.  Pre-game show begins at 5:30pm on “The Breeze,” KLIQ 94.5FM.

 

NFL> In NFL preseason football last night, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was injured after being sacked in the first quarter.  Newton did not return and was in a walking boot by the end of the game.  Newton had surgery on his left ankle in March of 2014…..The Oakland Raiders and the Green Bay Packers had to play on an 80 yard field after officials at IG Field in Winnipeg couldn’t make repairs to make the field safe.  There were holes in the artificial surface where goal posts for the Canadian Football League’s bigger field are usually planted.
