Local Sports 8-29-2019

The Nebraska football team continues to prepare for Saturday’s season opener against South Alabama.  The Jags are led by running back Tra Minter, who rushed for 801 yards and six touchdowns last year.  On defense, linebacker Nick Mobley returns after recording 56 tackles last season.  Nebraska is 84-14-3 when opening the season at home.  Kickoff will be at 11:00am.  We’ll have coverage on “The Breeze,” KLIQ 94.5FM beginning at 6:00am.


The Nebraska volleyball team will host Creighton and UCLA in the Husker Invite this weekend.  The Jays finished 29-5 last year and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.  The Bruins were 13-14 and missed the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2013.  Friday’s game with Creighton gets underway at 7:00pm.  We’ll have it on “The Breeze,” KLIQ 94.5FM beginning with the pre-game show at 6:30pm.


The Nebraska women’s soccer team will host Clemson tomorrow night and Baylor on Sunday.  The Huskers opened the season last week with a 4-0 loss to Kansas.


Nebraska Bowling coach Bill Straub announced his retirement yesterday.  Straub is the only head coach in the history of the Nebraska women’s program since bowling was added as a varsity sport for the 1997-98 season.  Before taking over the reins of the Husker women’s program, Straub served as the head coach of Nebraska’s men’s and women’s club programs beginning in 1983.  Straub guided the Nebraska women’s program to 10 overall national championships, including seven since becoming a varsity sport.


The Tri City Storm has announced the hiring of Jason Koehler as Assistant General Manager for the 2019-2020 season.  Koehler has spent the last ten seasons with the Youngstown Phantoms, serving as the teams General Manager from July 2015 to May 2019.  Before that, he spent six seasons as the teams Director of Player Personnel and Assistant General Manager.


The football season gets underway tonight in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.  Doane will play host to Ottawa University-Arizona, the University of Jamestown will play at Valley City State, Dakota Wesleyan is at Dakota State and Dordt will host Keiser University.


ROYALS> The Kansas City Royals beat Oakland 6-4 last night.  Hunter Dozier and Ryan O’Hearn hit home runs for the Royals.  The same two teams play at 12:15pm this afternoon.  We’ll have coverage on ESPN 1550 KICS.
