The Nebraska football team worked out for just over two hours yesterday.  Defensive coordinator Erik Chinander says his defense pickup up where they left off last season.  He says the team is a lot stronger and has more speed.  The Huskers will take today off and return to the practice field on Wednesday.  Nebraska will kickoff the season on August 31st at home against South Alabama.


The Nebraska men’s basketball team opened its Italian Tour with an 87-56 win over Stella Azzurra Academy yesterday. Jervay Green led the way with 15 points, but all 12 players scored.  Freshman Kevin Cross came off the bench and scored 13 points.  The Huskers will play the Silute Basketball Club on Wednesday.  Tip-off will be at 1:00pm, local time.


Former Huskers Robert Kokesh and Tyler Berger will return to the Nebraska wrestling program in coaching capacities.  Kokesh has been named an assistant coach while Berger will serve as a volunteer assistant.  Kokesh racked up 144 individual wins from 2011 to 2015.  Berger garnered All America honors on three occasions finishing second at the NCAA Championships in 2017, 2018 and 2019.


Defending national champion Morningside will start the season ranked number one in the Preseason NAIA Football Coaches Poll. The Mustangs went 15-0 last year and beat Benedictine of Kansas in the championship game. The Ravens are number two in the preseason poll followed by St. Francis of Indiana, Kansas Wesleyan and St. Xavier of Illinois. Northwestern of Iowa is 11th and Dordt is number 24.


Hastings Five Points Bank will play Bryant of Arkansas tomorrow in the Mid South American Legion Baseball Tournament at Duncan Field.  Hastings is 32-13 on the season after going 1-2 in the state tournament last week.  Bryant is 26-9 and won the Arkansas State Tournament for the third year in a row.  They advanced to the finals of the Mid South Regional last year before losing to Gonzales of Louisiana 1-0.  The Black Sox are led by Logan Chambers, who is hitting .393 with two home runs and 22 RBI’s. On the mound, Slade Renfro has thrown 49 innings with an ERA of 1.14.  Gametime will be at 7:00pm.  We’ll have it on 1230AM KHAS beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45pm.


Action begins at 10:00am tomorrow as the Three Rivers Bandits from Oklahoma play the Texarkana Bulldogs from Texas followed by Emporia of Kansas against Festus of Missouri at 1:00pm. The Nebraska state champion, Fremont First State Bank will play Sedalia of Missouri at 4:00pm.


ROYALS> The Boston Red Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 7-5 last night.  The same two teams will play again tonight at 6:10pm.  Pre-game show begins at 5:30pm on “The Breeze,” KLIQ 94.5FM.
