Local Sports 8-7-2019

The Nebraska men’s basketball team will play the second game of their Italian Tour today against the Silute Basketball Club.  The Huskers beat Stella Azzurra 87-56 on Monday.  Tip-off will be at 1:00pm, local time.

 

Former Husker Isaiah Roby has signed a four year, 6.7 million dollar deal with the Dallas Mavericks.  The 6-foot-eight inch Roby was the 45th overall player taken in this year’s NBA Draft.  Roby will be paid 1.5 million dollars in his rookie season, which is the largest first year salary in NBA history for a second round draft pick coming out of college.  He averaged 11.8 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists for the Huskers last year as a junior.  He shot 47 percent from the floor and 33 percent from three point range.  Roby was the first Husker taken in the draft in 20 years.

 

Former Husker Niles Paul has announced his retirement from the NFL.  Paul was cut by the San Francisco 49ers over the weekend, but also spent time with the Washington Redskins and the Jacksonville Jaguars.  He finished his NFL career with 954 receiving yards and two touchdown passes. Paul finished his Husker career in 2010 with 103 catches for 15-hundred 32 yards and five touchdowns.

 

The Hastings College volleyball team has been picked by the leagues coaches to finish fourth this year in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.  The Broncos finished 22-7 last year, 13-3 in the conference.  Northwestern was picked to win the championship this year followed by Midland, Dordt, Hastings and Jamestown.  Rounding out the preseason poll were Morningside, Doane, Concordia, Dakota Wesleyan, the College of St. Mary, Briar Cliff and Mount Marty.  Hastings will open the season on August 21st at home against Corbin University.

 

Hastings Five Points Bank will play Bryant of Arkansas today in the 2019 American Legion Baseball Mid South Regional at Duncan Field.  Hastings is 32-13 on the season.  They won the area tournament for the first time in 27 years, but went 1-2 at the state tournament last week in Omaha.  Bryant will be playing in the Mid South Regional for the sixth straight season after winning the Arkansas State Championship for the third straight season.  Bryant advanced to the regional championship last year before losing to Gonzalez of Louisiana.  Game time will be at 7:00pm.  We’ll have the game on 1230AM KHAS beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45pm.

 

In the other games, Three Rivers from Oklahoma will play Texarkana from Texas at 10:00am this morning followed by Emporia of Kansas against Festus of Missouri at 1:00pm.  At 4:00pm, it’s  Fremont First State Bank against Sedalia of Missouri.

 

ROYALS> The Kansas City Royals beat the Boston Red Sox 6-2 last night.  The same two teams play at 6:10pm tonight.  Pre-game show begins at 5:30pm on “The Breeze,” KLIQ 94.5FM.

 

NFL> Wide receiver Jordy Nelson has announced his retirement.  Nelson spent last season with the Oakland Raiders after ten seasons with the Green Bay Packers.  Nelson ranks third in Packers history in receptions, fifth in receiving yards, second in touchdown catches and third in 100 yard games.
