Local Sports 8-9-2019

Freshman Samari Curtis led three Huskers in double figures, as Nebraska held on for a 73-70 win over the Silute Basketball Club yesterday.  Curtis finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and three steals, as Nebraska built a 24-point halftime lead and hung on down the stretch after playing its second game in a 22-hour span.  Haanif Cheatham finished with 12 points while Dachon Burke added 11 as the Huskers improved to 3-0 on their summer trip.  Nebraska will play the Italian Select on Monday.  Tip-off will be at noon, local time.

 

Hastings Five Points Bank is still alive at the American Legion Mid South Regional baseball tournament at Duncan Field.  Hastings picked up a dramatic 7-6 victory over Emporia of Kansas yesterday in the elimination game.  Gabe Conant won it with a walk off single in the bottom of the ninth inning.  Conant also pitched four innings of scoreless relief while striking out three.  Tyson Bonham, Mike Boeve and Josh Brooks had three hits apiece.  Hastings is now 33-14 on the season and will play Twin Rivers of Oklahoma in another elimination game today at 1:00pm.  Twin Rivers lost to Fremont First State Bank 7-4 last night.  In the other game, Texarkana of Texas eliminated Sedalia of Missouri 5-4 and Festus of Missouri got by Bryant of Arkansas 2-1.  The schedule today has Twin Rivers of Oklahoma playing Hastings Five Points Bank at 1:00pm.  We’ll have the game on 1230AM KHAS beginning with the pre-game show at 12:45pm.  Texarkana of Texas will play Bryant of Arkansas in an elimination game at 4:00pm this afternoon.  Festus of Missouri will play Fremont First State Bank in the winners bracket final at 7:00pm tonight.  The winner of the double elimination tournament will advance to the Legion World Series next week in Shelby, North Carolina.

 

ROYALS> The Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 10-8 last night.  The same two teams will play at 6:10pm tonight.  Pre-game show begins at 5:30pm on “The Breeze,” KLIQ 94.5FM.

 

NFL> Detroit Lions wide receiver Jermaine Kearse suffered a broken leg and tweaked an ankle in last night’s preseason game against the New England Patriots.  The 29 year old Kearse signed with the Lions in June after spending time with Seattle and the New York Jets.  Kearse has 255 catches in his career for 32-hundred 91 yards and 17 touchdowns.

 

BIG TEN>  Maryland has hired former Illinois and Florida coach Ron Zook as a senior analyst and will work with the defense and special teams in an off-field role.  Zook has spent the past five seasons with the Green Bay Packers, coaching special teams.   In February, he joined the staff of the Salt Lake Stallions of the Alliance of American Football.  Zook did not coach in 2012 and 2013 after being fired by Illinois after the 2011 season.
