Hastings resident Walter J. Gundlach O.D., 94, passed away Monday, November 4, 2019,
at Perkins Pavilion Good Samaritan Society-Hastings Village, Hastings, NE.
Graveside services and burial with military rites by Hastings Military Honor Guard will
be 11 a.m. Thursday, November 7, at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Hastings
with Pastor Dale Phillips officiating. Visitation is 1-8 p.m. Wednesday with family
present 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to
Masonic/Eastern Star Home for Children in Fremont, NE or to the family for a memorial
to be established at a later date. Private condolences may be sent to the family at
www.lbvfh.com. Livingston Butler Volland Funeral Home & Cremation Center is
serving the family.
Walter was born January 5, 1925, in Chicago, IL to Walter H. & Cecilia C. (Canty)
Gundlach. He graduated in 1950 from Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, IL.
Walter served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946. He married Dora V. Nicholson on
October 6, 1944, in Illinois; she preceded him in death on November 7, 2002. They
moved to Hastings in 1952.
Walter was a self-employed doctor of optometry and was in partnership with House of
Optics in Hastings for 15 years. He was a 50-year member of Midwest Lodge #50 A.F. &
A.M. and Tehema Shrine Temple-York Rite.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dora V. Gundlach; brother, Raymond
Gundlach; and sister, Coletta Novak.
