Pedestrian Crosswalk Upgrades at the Central Nebraska Regional Airport

GRAND ISLAND – The Central Nebraska Regional Airport recently upgraded the pedestrian cross walk area between the Passenger Terminal and west parking lot along Sky Park Road.

Before there was a constant flashing yellow light, and according to traffic studies conducted, motorists ignored these lights as well as the speed limit reduction signs.

“Something needed to be done to slow down and alert motorists that pedestrians are using the crosswalk,” said Executive Director Mike Olson.

Now pedestrians can press a button to activate a flashing yellow strobe light to alert motorists they are crossing the road.  The Airport installed speed reductions signs reducing the speed limit from 55 mph to 45 mph in advance of the crossing as well as radar detection signs letting the motorists know how fast they are going.  Parallel white lines have been striped across the road enhancing the visibility for the motorists.

There is quite a bit of traffic on Sky Park Road and since this is a new alert system for both the pedestrian and motorists, we ask all to use caution when traveling through this area.
