HASTINGS – The Mid-South Regional American Legion Baseball Tournament will get underway on Wednesday and will run through the weekend. They are bringing in state champions form Nebraska, Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas. Hastings Five Points Bank will also be competing in the double elimination tournament.
This is the first time Hastings has hosted a regional tournament since 1976 and the first time Nebraska has hosted one since 2004. Hastings also used to host the American Legion World Series in 1959-1961 and in 1969 as well.
Russ Kindig, the Upper Level Legions Commissioner for the Hastings Legion Baseball teams, says this tournament being in Hastings is a big deal.
Yea, we feel like it is. It’s one of eight regionals in the country. Winner of each regional, those eight teams, will go to Shelby, North Carolina for the American Legion World Series which used to be held in Hastings. But we’ll start one thing at a time, get the regional back here. We feel like Hastings is a baseball town, always has been. And our coaches, Kevin Asher, Blake Marquardt, and Nate Story, have done a really good job of bringing Legion baseball back to Hastings and putting us right in the thick of things at the state tournament each year.
The first game on Wednesday will be at 10am and there will be games everyday until the championship game on Sunday. Each day the tournament will partner with a different non-profit, including Teammates on Saturday and Tom Osborne will throw out the first pitch Saturday as well.
Each day will also carry it’s own deals and specials. For more information, game times and schedule, merchandise, or to get tickets, you can check out HastingsBaseball.org.
